Long Island Rough Riders News Release

(Plainview, N.Y., May 8, 2004) - Long Island opened the contest with a swarming attack and broke through when Evan Bruno intercepted the New Hampshire half and converted an unassisted goal in the second minute.

The momentum shifted when New Hampshire‘s Bjorn Hansen beat the Rough Riders defense off an assist from Richard Fleming in the eight minute and equalized for the Phantoms. With New Hampshire now controlling the play and pressing the Long Island defense, a penalty kick was awarded in the 34th minute. Bjorn Hansen converted for his second goal of the match.

The Phantoms continued to dominate with Rough Riders goalkeeper Tobias Fuchs keeping Long Island in the game until Richard Fleming found the back of the net in the 40th minute to give New Hampshire a 3:1 lead.

The second half saw Long Island taking full control over the play, now pressing the New Hampshire defense. Moussa Sy was injured and replaced by Derrick Etienne in the 61st minute. In the 87th minute Derrick Etienne scored, assisted by Evan Bruno, for 3:2.

With Long Island pressing for the equalizer a Phantom's counter attack resulted in a goal from Paulo Cunha after a Rough Riders defensive miscue.

"Basic defending errors resulted in giving up unnecessary goals. That left us with a huge hill to climb when we came out in the second half", Rough Riders Head Coach Ronan Wiseman analyses after the game. General Manager Jim Kilmeade adds: "This is a very disappointing result. It is not a result of a lack of effort. The team is pressing right now and this is part of the process building a brand new team."

The Rough Riders travel to the New York rival Westchester Flames next Saturday, May 15. It is the return match from the Rough Riders home opener which resulted in a 1:1 tie. For team or ticket information please contact our office at (516)671-1585.
