Long Beach Armada News Release

(Dublin, CA. July 5, 2007) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that Long Beach Armada players Corey Myers and Rik Currier have had their contracts acquired. Myers is now a member of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's farm system and has reported to the AA Arkansas Travelers of the Southern League while Currier joins the Minatitlan Petroleros of the Mexican League that is rated AAA by Minor League Baseball.

"These two players certainly deserve these opportunities," said Darrell Evans, Manager of the Long Beach Armada. "We knew Corey wouldn't last long once we saw him play, and I'm still amazed that Rik Currier is not vying for a big league job somewhere."

Currier, 28, was a 6th round pick out of the University of Southern California by the New York Yankees in the 2001 amateur draft. He had a fabulous collegiate career and still holds the all-time strikeout record at USC, as he and teammate Mark Prior led the pitching on dominant Trojan squads. Once drafted, he quickly advanced through New York's farm system reaching AA Trenton in 2003. He stalled there as the Yankees worked on converting him to a closer and was eventually traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. After a season in the Phillies' farm system he was released and quickly signed with the Long Beach Armada last season. He was spectacular during 2006 as he led all of independent professional baseball with his E.R.A. of just 1.41. Off to a similar season this year, he was 3-1 with an E.R.A. of 1.55 as he struck out 32 and walked only 6 in the first month of the 2007 GBL season. He will join the Minatitlan Petroleros as a member of their starting rotation in their chase for a playoff spot in the LMB - Mexico's top professional league that carries a AAA rating by Minor League Baseball.

Myers, 26, was a first round pick (the 4th player taken overall) out of Desert Vista College as a 19 year old in the 1999 amateur draft when he was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Originally a third baseman, he also developed as a first baseman and catcher during 8 minor league seasons, the last three in AAA. He played in 2006 with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's AAA team in Salt Lake City of the Pacific Coast League before being released in the off-season. Signing with the Long Beach Armada in mid-June, Myers was quickly snapped up by the Angels once again when they had an opening occur on their AA farm team. Myers has reported to the Arkansas Travelers as he re-starts his climb to the major leagues.

These two acquisitions increase the total to 8 players in 2007 that have been acquired by the GBL by Major League organizations (7) or top foreign professional leagues (1).
