Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners took an early lead on Sunday at Wuerfel Park against the Traverse City Beach Bums, but could not hold it as the home team scored six unanswered runs, four of which came on home runs, to win the game 6-1 and take the weekend set two games to one.

Leading off the ballgame against starter James Ball (1-0), London Lindley doubled inside the right field line and stole third base. Nolan Earley brought Lindley home on a ground ball to first base to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. Miners starter Tyler Stubblefield (0-1) retired the Beach Bums in order in the first inning, but ran into trouble in the second when Will Kengor and Alexis Rivera reached on a walk and a single to lead off. After Stubblefield struck out Elijah Trail, Nick Murphy hit a go-ahead, three-run home run to right field to make it 3-1 Traverse City.

The Beach Bums would score single runs in each of the next three innings as well, including a solo home run by Giancarlo Brugnoni in the fourth inning and an RBI fielder's choice by Kengor in the fifth inning that plated the final run of the ballgame for a 6-1 Beach Bums advantage. Nick Palacios allowed only one baserunner over the final three innings of the game in relief, but the Miners' bats were held to two hits in the rubber match defeat by Ball and three relievers to clinch the series.

With their week-long road trip concluded, Southern Illinois heads back home to Rent One Park after the Memorial Day holiday to open up a three-game series against the Florence Freedom beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miners will honor Rich Herrin and Mike Rude as the first two inductees into the Southern Illinois High School Coaches Hall Of Fame in a pregame ceremony on Tuesday night.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
