New York Lizards News Release

The Long Island Lizards drafted three well-rounded players in the 2004 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, held earlier this evening at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Long Island selected Corey Harned (D/M, Johns Hopkins), Andy Murray (M/FO, Salisbury) and Steve Berger (M, Washington College) in the third, fourth and fifth rounds, respectively.

Long Island selected Corey Harned from Johns Hopkins with their third round pick (18th overall). Harned excelled at Hopkins as a long-stick midfielder, scooping 52 ground balls in his Senior season with the Blue Jays. Corey was named Division I All-American Honorable Mention this season at midfield. The Holbrook native is an excellent one-on-one defender who excels at jump-starting the transition game, and is outstanding on the wing of faceoffs as well. Harned attended Sachem High School, where he set a school record for career goals.

Andy Murray dominated Division III lacrosse at Salisbury, and helped lead the Sea Gulls to a perfect 20-0 season, including a national title. Murray is a very well-rounded player, and was named National Player of the Year in 2003. The first-team All-American tallied 42 points (21 goals, 21 assists) this season, scooped an amazing 179 ground balls, and won 228 of 334 faceoffs (68.3%).

Stephen Berger was one of the top players in Division III lacrosse, leading Washington College with a school-record 94 points in 2004 (53 goals, 41 assists). Berger, who was team Captain at Washington College, also scooped 70 ground balls. The Maryland native was named first-team All-American in 2004 and 2003, and second-team All-American as a Sophomore in 2003.

The Lizards traded their first round pick to the New Jersey Pride in February 2003, in a five-player deal that sent midfielder Jay Jalbert and attackman Chris Massey to the Lizards. Long Island traded their second round pick in April 2003 in exchange for defenseman Brian Voelker.

The Long Island Lizards (1-1) meet the Philadelphia Barrage (0-2) on Sunday at Villanova, at 4:00 PM. The game will mark the first meeting between the former cross-sound rivals since the Barrage relocated from Bridgeport this offseason. The Lizards will practice on Friday evening at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, at 8:00 PM. The practice is open to the public and media is encouraged to attend.
