Boston, MA– The Boston Cannons of Major League lacrosse (MLL) made six draft picks in today's MLL Collegiate Draft that took place in the Edgerton Performing Arts Center on Sacred Heart University's campus. The Cannons top selection (6th Overall) was defenseman Chris Passavia from the University of Maryland. The Cannons selected defensemen with their top two picks, picking North Carolina's Ronnie Staines with their second pick (9th Overall). Boston rounded out its selections with two midfielders and two attackmen.

"We are happy with how the draft worked out for us," said Scott Hiller, Cannons Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel. "We addressed the needs we had and look forward to seeing all six selections at practice."

The 6'1, 205 pound Passavia was named a 2004 First Team All-American. For Passavia, it was his third USILA All-American honor, as he was recognized as a Third Team All-American as a sophomore and a Second Team All-American as a junior. Passavia follows the most recent three-time Terp All-American, (Rochester's) Michael Howley, who was named the National Defenseman of the Year in 2003. Passavia finished his career playing in 59 games with 53 starts. He scooped up 161 groundballs and caused nearly 100 turnovers. He led the Terps in caused turnovers this season with 51 and also had 47 groundballs along with three assists.

Staines (Severna Park, Md.), one of the standout defensemen in Tar Heel history, captained the North Carolina team and he led a defense that allowed only 8.78 goals per game in 2004. He too was selected to be a First Team All-American in 2004.

The Cannons remaining picks were Kevin Frew (M/FO – UNC – 12th Overall), Jeff Bryan (A – Army – 15th Overall), Brian Nee (A – Syracuse – 21st Overall) and Drew Pfarr (M – Towson – 27th Overall).

The Cannons roster will swell to 35 to accommodate the 2004 college draftees (23-man active roster, 7-man practice squad and 5-man college draftee roster). Boston then has 30-days to activate their college draftees or they will be placed back into the MLL Player Pool.

The next Cannons game is this Saturday June 5 at home, Boston University's Nickerson Field, at 7:00PM. Boston hosts the Rochester Rattlers. Players selected in today's draft are eligible to be activated for the game.
