New York Lizards News Release
The Long Island Lizards (3-0) meet the Baltimore Bayhawks (3-1) for the second time this season on Saturday, at Homewood Field. The Lizards defeated Baltimore earlier this year, 14-12, in the Major League Lacrosse opener at Homewood three weeks ago. The two heavyweights also met in both the 2001 and 2002 Championship Games, with the Lizards prevailing in 2001 and Baltimore triumphing in 2002. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 PM. A.J. Haugen (8 goals, 4 assists) and Greg McCavera (7 goals, 5 assists) lead the Lizards offense after three games, while Tim Goettelmann (6 goals, 4 assists), Jay Jalbert (6 goals, 1 assist), and Chris Massey (6 goals, 1 assist) each have six goals. Newcomer Kevin Lowe (4 goals, 7 assists) was named Bud Light MVP for his performance in the Lizards 17-14 win against Rochester last week, scoring three goals and adding five assists in the victory. The Lizards defense is led by veterans Pat McCabe (Lizards Captain), Brian Voelker (Head Coach of Bayhawks in 2001), and John Gagliardi. Long Island has allowed an average of 12 goals-against per game, a league best. Brian Dougherty has been phenomenal between the pipes this year, averaging 19 saves per game. Baltimore has the most impressive offense in the league, including player/coach/legend Gary Gait. Gait (11 goals, 3 assists) was named MLL Offensive Player of the Week, scoring nine goals and two assists, including an overtime game-winner, in the two Baltimore wins last weekend. Also leading the Bayhawks offense is Mark Millon (18 goals, 4 assists), Tom Marachek (11 goals, 4 assists), and Mark Frye (5 goals, 2 assists, including 2 two-point goals). 2002 League MVP Greg Cattrano has been averaging 17 saves per game. Long Island leads the all-time series 4-3. Saturday's game is the second of three regular season meetings between Long Island and Baltimore. The two teams meet again in the season finale at Mitchel Athletic Complex (Sun, August 17).
