New York Lizards News Release

The Long Island Lizards (4-2) look to bounce back when they take on the lowly Bridgeport Barrage (0-5) at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday, at 7:00 PM. The Lizards still lead the American Division after falling to the Boston Cannons (3-3) on Sunday, 17-13. Bridgeport fell to Long Island, 21-17, in a shootout two weeks ago at Mitchel Field, and is currently coming off a bye week. The Barrage finished with a 3-11 record in both the 2001 and 2002 seasons, but managed to upset Long Island once each year. Saturday's game is the final meeting between the two teams in 2003. The game will be televised via tape delay on ESPN2 on Tuesday, at 3:00 PM.

Jay Jalbert (20 goals, 6 assists) leads the Lizards offense at the midway point of the season. The All-Star midfielder scored seven goals against Bridgeport two weeks ago, and also leads the league in ground balls with 49. Kevin Lowe (6 goals, 18 assists) is leading the league in assists. Lowe tied a league record when he recorded six assists against the Barrage. A.J. Haugen (15 goals, 4 assists) and Tim Goettelmann (14 goals, 4 assists) round out the Lizards top scorers. Pat McCabe, Brian Voelker and John Gagliardi have started all six games for the Lizards defense, while Brian Dougherty is set to return between the pipes after bruising his shoulder three weeks ago in Baltimore. Jalbert, Lowe, Haugen, Goettelmann, McCabe, Gagliardi and Dougherty will all play in the 2003 MLL All-Star Game, on Thursday, July 17th, at Mitchel Field.

15 of the 23 players on Bridgeport's roster live on Long Island, including former Lizards defenseman Matt McFarland. McFarland did not crack the lineup in four games for Long Island, and was released. Bridgeport signed the Garden City native two weeks ago. Bridgeport is led offensively by Blake Miller (12 goals, 1 assist), Roy Colsey (10 goals, 1 two-pointer, 1 assist), and two-sport star and All-World MVP Doug Shanahan (12 goals, 1 two-pointer). Shanahan has also been impressive on the faceoff, winning 59% of his draws. The Barrage boasts a talented defense, featuring Rob Doerr, Nick Polanco, and Matt McFarland. Justin Cynar has been playing between the pipes recently in place of injured goaltender Mark Spruyt. The Barrage should be well rested following a week off.

Long Island leads the all-time series, 7-2. The division rivals met four times in 2001 and 2002, with the Lizards winning 3-1 each season. Saturday's game is the second of two regular season contests between the teams in 2003.
