New York Lizards News Release

The Rochester Rattlers (7-5) defeated the Long Island Lizards (6-6), 21-14, in front of 4,989 fans at Kearney Field on Saturday evening. The loss means the Lizards will not advance to the Major League Lacrosse playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Lizards advanced to all three previous league championship games, winning the title in 2001 and 2003.

The game marked the first time Rochester has ever defeated the Lizards in ten tries.

Rochester scored early and often, jumping out to a 5-1 lead which they would never relinquish. Rochester dominated the second quarter as well, and took a dominating 12-5 lead into the half. With their backs against the wall, the Lizards battled back into the game with three straight goals, cutting the score to 12-8, but the Rattlers battled back again, taking a 14-8 lead into the final quarter.

Long Island scored two straight to cut the score to 14-10, however, Rochester mounted four straight goals to take a dominating 18-10 lead. With under 7 minutes remaining in the Lizards season, they made their last stab with three straight goals, including an A.J. Haugen two-pointer, cutting the score to 18-14 with five minutes left to play. However, a contraversial Casey Powell goal that apparently just beat the shot clock stole the momentum back, and the Rattlers kept scoring to secure their first National Division Title.

Josh Coffman led the Rattlers with five goals and one assist, while Casey Powell (3G, 1A) and Ryan Powell (2G, 3A) chipped in. A.J. Shannon added three goals for the Rattlers, and Tillman Johnson frustrated the Lizards offense with 25 saves.

Long Island was led by A.J. Haugen (3g, 1 two-pointer) and Jay Jalbert (2G, 2A). Tim Goettelmann and Chris Massey also added two goals for Long Island. Chris Cercy won 22 of 37 faceoffs, and Brian Dougherty again recorded 20 saves for Long Island in goal.

The Lizards finish the season at 6-6. The MLL Championship Weekend, at Nickerson Field in Boston, will feature the Rattlers against the Philadelphia Barrage (7-5) at 5:00 PM on Friday, and the American Divison Champion Boston Cannons (8-4) against the Baltimore Bayhawks (7-5) at 8:00 PM. The winners will meet in the Final on Sunday afternoon.
