Lizards hope to bounce back against struggling Barrage on Friday
June 25, 2003 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
New York Lizards News Release
The Long Island Lizards (3-1) meet the lowly Bridgeport Barrage (0-4) on Friday, at Mitchel Athletic Complex. The Lizards still lead the American Division after losing their first game this season to the Baltimore Bayhawks, while the Barrage are yet to even lose by a margin of less then seven. Bridgeport finished with a 3-11 record in both the 2001 and 2002 season, however, managed to upset Long Island once in each of the two seasons. Faceoff is set for 7:30 PM.
Lizards ironman A.J. Haugen (11 goals, 4 assists) leads the offense after four games, as well as Tim Goettelmann (9 goals, 4 assists), and newcomer Jay Jalbert (11 goals, 2 assists). Jalbert led the Lizards with five goals and an assist against Baltimore last week. Kevin Lowe (4 goals, 10 assists) has been a pleasant surprise for Long Island, racking up three assists against Baltimore last week. Lowe is seeing his first MLL action after playing for Team USA since the league's inception. Veterans Pat McCabe, Brian Voelker, and John Gagliardi lead the Lizards defense. Long Island has allowed an average of 12 goals-against per game, a league best. Brian Dougherty has been phenomenal between the pipes, averaging 18 saves per game.
The Bridgeport Barrage have a Long Island flavor to them; 17 of the 23 players on their roster live on Long Island, including former Lizards defenseman Matt McFarland. McFarland did not crack the lineup in four games for Long Island, and was released late last week. Bridgeport signed the Garden City native on Monday. Bridgeport is led offensively by Manhasset native Blake Miller (10 goals, 1 assist), two-sport star and All-World MVP Doug Shanahan (10 goals, one two-pointer), and Roy Colsey (7 goals, 1 assist). The Barrage boasts a talented defense, featuring Rob Doerr, Nick Polanco, and Matt McFarland. Massapequa native Justin Cynar has been playing between the pipes recently in place of injured goaltender Mark Spruyt. The Barrage should be well rested after a week off.
Long Island leads the all-time series, 6-2. The division rivals met four times in 2001 and 2002, with the Lizards winning 3-1 each season. Friday's game is the first of two regular season contests between the two teams in 2003. The two teams meet again in two weeks at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard (Sat, July 12, ESPN2).
