HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Charlotte Hounds suffered their first loss of the season Saturday night at James M. Shuart Stadium, dropping a 21-18 decision to the New York Lizards. Rob Pannell was named Coca-Cola Player of the Game following a nine point (8g, 1a) performance. The Hounds were lead by Stephen Keogh and Mike Chanenchuk, who each tallied five points.

The Lizards struck first, tallying two goals just 27 seconds apart from Tommy Palasek and Pannell, but Will Haus got the Hounds on the board 13 seconds later. Pannell would restore New York's two-goal lead, only to have John Haus cut the lead again off a beautiful one handed goal while falling down, making it 3-2 Lizards only five minutes into the game. Joe McCallion tied it at 3 with an assist coming from Hounds leading scorer Joey Sankey, who returned to the lineup after missing last week's game against Florida with a hamstring injury. Paul Rabil notched his seventh goal of the season to give the Lizards a 4-3 lead at the end of one.

The two teams traded goals to start the second. Brendan Fowler knotted the game at 6 off a feed from Kevin Cunningham with less than 12 minutes to go in the quarter. The Lizards then ripped off six unanswered goals, three of which came from the stick of Pannell. Keogh ended the run with a goal on a man advantage, but it was the home team taking a 12-7 lead into halftime.

The Hounds came out of the break on fire, going on a six goal run of their own, four of those coming from McCallion and Keogh, to take a 13-12 lead. That lead would only last 1:27 though, as the Lizards ended the run off a goal from Dave Lawson. His tally sparked a four goal run for the Lizards, who closed out the third with a 16-13 lead.

Cunningham cut the lead to two just nine seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Lizards answered with goals from Pannell and Matt Gibson. Cunningham struck again midway through the fourth, only to have the Lizards' Jojo Morasco and Rabil score back to back, making it 20-15 with under six minutes to go. Keogh brought the deficit to four with 3:40 on the clock until Gibson tallied his second of the game making it 21-16 Lizards. Mike Chanenchuk added a 2-point goal with 10 seconds remaining in the game, but it wasn't enough.

Hounds goalie Charlie Cipriano made 22 saves on 43 shots, while Lizards keeper Drew Adams stopped 17 of 34 shots.

The Hounds (3-1) will have a bye next weekend before continuing their road trip to face the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Friday, June 3. The Bayhawks (2-1) will face the Denver Outlaws and Rochester Rattlers before hosting the Hounds. Faceoff on June 3 is scheduled for 7:30pm at Navy Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium.
