
Lisa Leslie named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, MAY 30, 2006 - Lisa Leslie of the Los Angeles Sparks was named WNBA Player of the Week for games played Saturday, May 20 through Sunday, May 28.
Leslie scored 34.7 percent of her team's points while leading the Sparks to a 2-1 record. Leslie, a two-time WNBA MVP and 11-time recipient of the Player of the Week award, is averaging a league-best 25.3 points, 12.3 total rebounds, 9.3 defensive rebounds, and is tied for third in the league in blocks (2.00 bpg) while shooting 58.7 percent (27-of-46) from the field.
Leslie recorded her first double-double of the season on May 23 versus the Charlotte Sting with a game-high 27 points and 16 rebounds, while dishing two assists and knocking down 11-of-16 field-goals in a 72-65 win. Two days later, on May 25, she pulled in another double-double with a game-high 25 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks, while leading her team to a 80-71 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Through three games, she is ranked first in seven statistical categories for the Sparks, including minutes (93), field goals made and attempted (27-46), free throws made (22), offensive and defensive rebounds (9-28) and blocks (6).
Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Monique Currie, Connecticut's Katie Douglas, Detroit's Katie Smith, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, Indiana's Tamika Catchings, Sacramento's Nicole Powell, San Antonio's Vickie Johnson and Washington's Alana Beard.
