Maine Mammoths News Release
COLUMBUS- The Maine Mammoths (1-7) travelled to Columbus, Georgia for the first-ever Mammoths and Lions head-to-head matchup. The game didn't go as planned as the Lions took down the Mammoths 55-34.
The quarter was a slow quarter for both teams, but the Mammoths had the advantage, being up 10-7 over the number four Lions to end the first quarter. The score that put the Mammoths up was a 19 yard touchdown pass to Wide Receiver Devin Wilson. The second quarter wasn't what the Mammoths expected, especially after the impressive first quarter of play. After continuous scoring from the Lions, the score at halftime was 35-18 with the Lions now in control of the game in front of their home crowd.
In the third quarter, the Mammoths were looking to come back and take the lead, as they held the Lions to only 13 points in the third quarter while scoring 16 points. To open the second half, Mammoths Wide Receiver Edgar Poe Jr. reached over the plane to score a touchdown to make the score 25-35 after the successful PAT from Henry Nell. A quick rushing touchdown from the Lions increased their lead, as they put the score at 42-25. The Mammoths were not willing to back down at this point in the game. A deep pass down the field and successful PAT puts the Mammoths back in a two-possession game 32-42. After a successful deuce by Nell, the game is now within one touchdown and two-point conversion, with the score now being 34-42. On fourth down, the Lions went for it and threw a short pass to Wide Receiver Tristan Purifoy as the third quarter expires. The Lions held the Mammoths to a shutout fourth quarter and then scored six points to end the game. The Mammoths ultimately lost 32-48 to the Columbus Lions. This loss brings the Maine Mammoths to a 1-7 record, just one game ahead of the 0-7 Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, who are currently in last place in the league.
The next Mammoths game is against the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 7:00 pm (E.T.) for Teacher/Superhero Appreciation Night.
