Lincoln's Askew & Long earn NIFL weekly honors

July 3, 2002 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Lincoln Capitols News Release

Lincoln Capitols' running back Rayshawn Askew and kicker Chace Long have been honored by the NIFL as the Pacific Conference's offensive and special teams player of the week, respectively, for their efforts in Lincoln's record-setting 120-15 win over the RiverCity Renegades last Saturday.

Askew ran for a season-high 111 yards and seven touchdowns against the Renegades. He had matched his season-best of four touchdowns before halftime, having scored Lincoln's first three of the night and the 7 rushing touchdowns and 42 points scored are the best in the NIFL this season. Askew vaulted over Tennessee running back Mike Cosey into second on the league rushing chart with 794 yards and trails only Birdie Dockery of Ohio Valley in the race for the league's rushing title.

Long matched his season high and the league-best mark of 16 points scored kicking, all on PATs. The former Nebraska kickoff specialist is leading the NIFL in PAT's made (75), PAT percentage (92.6) field goals made (30) and field goal percentage (61.2). Long had previously been honored as the conference's special teams player of the week after hitting the game winning 34-yard field goal against Bismarck on June 14th.

Askew moved into third in the league's scoring chase with his seven touchdowns, while Long is ranked seventh.

The Capitols wrap up the regular season Friday night when they host the Tri-City Diesel at 7:35PM.
