Lightning, City of Newark Hosting af2 Tryout Camp

STOCKTON, Calif. -The Stockton Lightning of the arenafootball2 league are scheduled to host an open tryout camp at Newark (Calif.) Memorial High School on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 starting at 10:00 a.m.

For the fourth straight year, local football talent hopeful of a start in professional football get their shot in Stockton. The tryout camp is open to all interested participants and serves as a preliminary stage to Lightning training camp, scheduled to be hosted in Stockton in March 2009 at Stockton Arena and Oak Park (dates and locations to be announced).

Newark Memorial High School is located at 39375 Cedar Boulevard in Newark. Additional tryout camp locations and dates will be announced soon.

HOW TO REGISTER: Registration will begin for all participants at all camp locations begin at 9:00 a.m., with tryouts to follow at 10:00 a.m. Pre-registration is $40 and spots can be reserved by contacting Lightning football operations at (209) 373-1519. A $50 fee (cash only) will be accepted for "walk-up" registrations.

Pre-registration is highly recommended. For information regarding pre-registration, please contact Lightning manager of team operations Jeff Zavatsky at the above information. Lightning head coach Chad Carlson and staff will be on hand to conduct workouts and evaluate players.

Selected players will be invited to stay after the tryouts for position specific, non-contact scrimmaging. Each individual participant is expected to wear appropriate workout clothing, and is responsible for supplying his own football cleats (suitable for natural grass surface) and braces, if needed.

TRYOUT CAMP ITINERARY (Newark Memorial High School):

9:00 - 10:00 a.m.: Registration
10:00 - 10:10 a.m.: Staff Introduction / Explanation of Combine
10:10 - 10:50 a.m.: 225-pound Bench Press (EVERYONE)
10:55 - Noon: 15-yard Short Shuttle
(SPLIT 3 GROUPS) Broadjump
40-yard dash
Noon - 12:15 p.m.: Flex and Stretch period
12:15 - 12:30 p.m.: Position Drills
12:30 - 1:00 p.m.: One-on-One Drills

The Lightning open the 2009 af2 regular season on Sunday, March 29 against the Central Valley Coyotes with a Week One road matchup at Selland Arena, starting at 7:00 p.m. Both teams face a Week Four rematch in the Lightning home opener on Saturday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Stockton Arena.
