Liberty Belles Season Opener
April 25, 2002 - Independent Women's Football League (IWFL)
Philadelphia Liberty Belles News Release
On Saturday, April 27, 2002 at 7:00 PM the Philadelphia Liberty Belles kick off their second season of women's tackle football with two goals in mind:
1) Defend their title of League champion 2) Promote early childhood literacy.
The Liberty Belles have partnered with St. Christopher's Hospital for Children to promote the Reach Out and Read program. Reading is a key step in any child's development and it is an important element of every child's future. Studies have shown that children who are exposed to books and reading at a young age are more likely to learn to read on schedule. The Reach Out and Read program promotes early literacy among children. Oftentimes, underprivileged children do not have access to books. Through the Reach Out and Read program, many families that cannot afford to buy books have been able to share the joy of reading with their children. "The Reach out and Read program enables St. Christopher's to give books out to children that can't even afford to have books." Says Belles owner Marie Olsen. "These children are our future. We need to get them to read to educate them, so they can do the same for their children someday."
Fans of the Liberty Belles can help the team and St. Christopher's Hospital open up the wonderful world of reading to hundreds of area children by bringing books to Belles games to donate to the program. "We would like every fan to bring in a new book to our games to donate to this cause and we will give them a free gift" says Olsen. Books such as Curious George and Madeline and anything Dr. Seuss are recommended.
The Liberty Belles Season opener against the Connecticut Crush will also be a time for reflection on the events of the past year. The Belles would like to honor the heroism of all who aided in the aftermath of 9/11 and remember those whom we have lost. All area firefighters, police officers and EMTs are invited to attend Saturday's game free of admission with uniform, township jersey or badge.
The Philadelphia Liberty Belles are one of 10 charter teams of the National Women's Football League www.NWFLcentral.com that burst onto the scene in 2001. Under the guidance of team owner and General manager Marie Olsen and the direction of head coach Russ Carfagno the Philadelphia Liberty Belles played an 8-1 season culminating in winning the Pat Windham-Harvey Bowl to become League Champs. The Liberty Belles play home games at A.A. Garthwaite field in Conshohocken, PA. in front of crowds of over 2500 fans. Games are held Saturday evenings at 7:00PM. Visit the Belles' website at www.philadelphiabelles.com and learn more about the team and its players or contact the team at 1-866-4-BELLES for tickets and information.
