DURHAM, N.C. – Former Fargo-Moorhead catcher Chris Coste has been named the starting designated hitter for the International League in the Triple-A All- Star Game versus the Pacific Coast League in Oklahoma City on July 10.

Coste, the author of an autobiography who is in his third season with Triple-A Buffalo in the Cleveland organization, is currently the top hitter in the International League with a .357 batting average. He also has 17 doubles and three homers in 258 at bats.

· Former Northern League Central umpire Jeff Latter (2000) has received a promotion by the Professional Baseball Umpiring Corps (PBUC). Latter was moved from the Northwest League to the Midwest League this week and will work his first game tonight in Peoria, Ill. Latter's partner in the Northwest League was Chris Bakke, who worked area games in Lincoln in 2001.

· New Jersey RHP Joel Bennett tossed perhaps the most dominant game of the Northern League season so far on June 23. He pitched 7 2-3 innings at Allentown, gave up five hits, one run, walked one and struck out 16 batters. Bennett was bested by Elmira LHP Justin Stine for the most recent Daktronics Northern League East Pitcher of the Week award. Stine threw a one-hitter.

· The New Jersey Jackals have won 10 games in a row through June 28 and are now three off the all-time Northern League record of 13 wins in a row set by Fargo-Moorhead in 1998.

· The Duluth-Superior Dukes signed former major league outfielder Derrick Gibson on Monday. Gibson has hit two homers in his first three games. He played 17 games for the Rockies and was once one of their top power hitter prospects. Gibson was signed during the spring by the NFL's Cleveland Browns to play linebacker. He was released and found his way to Duluth for baseball.

· The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks inked former major leaguer Eddie Williams on June 21. The "Big Dog" played from 1986-1990 and from 1994-98 in the major leagues for Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox, San Diego, Los Angeles, Detroit and Pittsburgh. He has a .252 major league batting average with 39 homers and 150 RBIs in 1,145 career at bats. He played last year in Mexico and in the Western League.

· The Brockton Rox are holding a youth clinic on Saturday for interested youngsters. Manager Ed Nottle, his coaches and players will instruct the youths from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.
