Late Rally Sparks CaneFires to Sweep
September 28, 2008 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
West Oahu CaneFires News Release
West Oahu used a three-run eighth inning to pull away from North Shore, 6-3, and sweep the two-game series between the squads this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.
With the contest tied at 3-3 heading into the home half of the eighth inning, the CaneFires received RBI singles from Brian Friday and Cyle Hankerd, and a Chris Hatcher sacrifice fly to break the deadlock. Moises Robles tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save, and preserve the victory for Cliff Flagello (1-0), a Baltimore Orioles prospect, who earned the win after striking out two in a scoreless eighth inning.
West Oahu (2-0) received two hits apiece from Miles Durham, Logan Schafer and Kyle Peter.
Kurt Mertins paced North Shore (0-2) with a game-high three hits-half of the Honu's offensive output. North Shore reliever Ryosuke Eguchi (0-1) took the loss after surrendering the decisive three runs in the CaneFires' final at-bat.
Both squads have tomorrow off, and return to action Tuesday. North Shore hosts Honolulu at Hans L'Orange Park (3 p.m.), while Waikiki hosts West Oahu at 7 p.m., also at Hans L'Orange.
