Sudbury, Mass. (Friday) - The United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX) returned to action on Friday evening in Sudbury, Mass., with the Boston Storm (4-2) rallying late to hand the previously unbeaten Long Island Sound (5-1) its first loss in franchise history. The winning Boston side was led by a hat trick from Kayla Treanor, while Long Island was paced offensively by a hat trick from Halle Majorana.
After Kelly McPartland opened an account for the Sound, 1-0, Treanor responded for the Storm before Majorana put Long Island back on top, 2-1. Boston then struck for a pair from Erin Silfer and Maddy Acton, only to see the Sound take a 4-3 advantage into the intermission when Hilary Fratzke and Majorana tallied the final two scores of the opening half.
Majorana completed her hat trick to make it 5-3 at the start of the second half, but the Storm was able to level the count when Treanor and Acton hit back-to-back goals. Nora Barry and Kara Cannizzaro then exchanged notches to make it a 6-6 contest, setting up a dramatic finish to this encounter.
As they have been known to do this season, Long Island next went on a big run that put them up three points, 9-6, via consecutive tallies from Barry, Fratzke and Taryn VanThof with just under 20 minutes remaining on the clock.
Treanor first ended the Sound scoring sequence to pull her team within a pair, followed up by back-to-back goals from Cannizzaro and Lauren Kahn to once again equalize the match, 9-9. With roughly 2:25 left in regulation, Kristin Igoe was then able to hit a fourth consecutive strike for Boston that regained the advantage for her team, 10-9, and the Storm was able to hold on the rest of the way to finish off the huge victory.
With the result, a UWLX record five-game winning streak comes to a halt for Long Island, while Boston now finds itself just a win behind the Sound on top of the league table.
The UWLX will next return to action on Saturday afternoon, with the Baltimore Ride (2-3) and Philadelphia Force (0-5) meeting up at Vonnie Gross Field in West Chester, Penn. The opening draw for that contest is slated for 4:00 p.m.
