This past week the Northern Arizona Wranglers won its first Indoor Football League National Championship, two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning became part of the National Women's Soccer League NJ/NY Gotham FC ownership group, the Albany Empire won back-to-back National Arena League championships and the WNBA said goodbye to Sylvia Fowles. Highlights from this week come from the Indoor Football League, National Arena League, Canadian Football League, National Women's Soccer League, Major League Soccer, United Soccer League Championship, Women's National Basketball Association, BIG3, Texas League, Appalachian League, American Hockey League, 3ICE and Premier Lacrosse League.


Indoor Football League

The Northern Arizona Wranglers are bringing the Indoor Football League National Championship Trophy back to Prescott Valley, Ariz., as they defeated the Quad City Steamwheelers, by a score of 47-45. The best example of a "from worst to first" team is the Northern Arizona Wranglers. From winning one game just a season ago, to finishing the 2022 season at the top as IFL National Champions. An incredible season must be credited to both our entire coaching staff, and the amazing players that made this possible.

Championship Celebration

The IFL is pleased to announce that Arizona Rattlers quarterback, Drew Powell, has been named the 2022 IFL MVP. This is Powell's third time earning the title. He was named MVP is 2018 as well as 2021. Powell led the Rattlers to a 13-3 record and the #1 seed in the Western Conference. He led the league with 2,630 passing yards. That's almost 300 yards more than his closest contemporary. Powell also led the league in touchdowns with 63. Powell was second in the league with a completion percentage of 66.6%. His quarterback efficiency rating also topped the league at 182.5.

National Arena League

At MVP Arena, Head Coach Tom Menas lead his Albany Empire team to the 2022 NAL Championship title with a final score of 47-20. it was 34-7 at the half. NAL MVP Darius Prince scored three touchdowns, while quarterback Sam Castronova recorded six touchdown passes to earn the NAL Championship game MVP award. The Empire is the first team to win consecutive titles in NAL history. WNYT Sports Director Rodger Wyland recaps the day.

National Women's Soccer League

NJ/NY Gotham FC is pleased to welcome former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and current Giants Executive Pete Guelli as the club's newest minority owners. They join a growing ownership group that has added seven other investors this year. "I have lived and worked in this community for almost two decades," said Manning. "It's home to me, and Gotham FC is my family's favorite soccer club. Combine that with the organization's strong leadership, talented roster, and sustained growth, and it became clear that joining this great group was a fantastic opportunity."

It was announced by Gotham FC that New York Giants Quarterback Eli Manning will be a part of the minority ownership of the soccer team. Video is Eli's announcement of being a part of the group, and his thoughts on the impact of sports and the opportunities he hopes to create for his daughters.

Major League Soccer

The MLS All-Stars defeated the LIGA MX All-Stars 2-1 in the 2022 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target at Allianz Field in Minneapolis. Minnesota United FC goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair was named the MVP of the game in the first All-Star appearance of his career. MLS goal scorers included LAFC's Carlos Vela - his first in an MLS All-Star Game - and a penalty-kick score from Seattle's Raúl Ruidíaz , while LIGA MX's lone goal was scored by Kevin Álvarez in the 84th minute.

United Soccer League Championship

The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week for Week 22 of the 2022 regular season with Sacramento Republic FC midfielder Rodrigo Lopez voted the Championship Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball after notching a goal and two assists across a four-point week for the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Finalists that further solidified their position in the Western Conference playoff positions.

NBA G League

Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations & General Manager Mitch Kupchak announced that Greensboro Swarm head coach Jordan Surenkamp will return in his role for the 2022-23 G League season. "We're excited to have Jordan return as the head coach of the Swarm," said Kupchak. "Jordan is passionate about player development and understands the important role it plays in our organization. He did an excellent job working with our young players and our new coaching staff during Summer League. I look forward to him continuing to work closely with coach Clifford to implement the Hornets style of play with the Swarm."

Texas League

No Major Leaguer has ever done what St. Louis Cardinals prospect Chandler Redmond did for the Springfield Cardinals last night. Presenting the Home Run Cycle:

Five Arkansas Travelers pitchers combined to no-hit the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in a 6-0 win on Friday night in front of 7,024 at Dickey-Stephens Park. Prelander Berroa started and struck out 11 over five innings and four relievers pitched one inning each to close it out. The only baserunners in the game were four walks. Following Berroa, Blake Weiman, Jake Haberer, Rob Kaminsky and Braden Shipley finished off the Travelers second no-no of the season.


Appalachian League

The Kingsport Axmen defeated the Burlington Sock Puppets, 5-2, at Burlington Athletic Stadium to win the 2022 Appalachian League Championship. The Axmen built an early 5-0 lead and relied on pitchers Ryan Murphy (James Madison) and Andrew Lindsey (Tennessee) the rest of the way. Murphy was named Championship Game MVP as he allowed just one run on two hits and a walk over 5.0 innings. Murphy earned the win and struck out five. Lindsey pitched the final four innings; He allowed one run on five hits and a walk. Lindsey struck out six and earned the save.

American Hockey League

The Hershey Bears announced today that Todd Nelson has been named the 28th head coach in franchise history. "We're excited to welcome Todd Nelson to Hershey as our head coach," said Bryan Helmer. "Todd has had an accomplished coaching career featuring multiple championships. He's a coach that is driven to win, and he has played a pivotal role in developing a long list of players who have advanced to the National Hockey League. Having played for Todd myself, I know how detailed he is, and he's truly a coach who gets the most out of his players. We're fortunate to have Todd at the helm, and we're excited about rounding out his staff with an experienced and decorated group of coaches."

Charlotte Checkers alternate jersey for the 2022-23 season


The Kalamazoo Wings, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Columbus Blue Jackets, announced Monday that ECHL Hall of Famer Joel Martin has been named the organization's director of hockey operations and 21st head coach. Martin, 39, ascends into the K-Wings head coaching position after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach under former Kalamazoo head coach Nick Bootland.
