Knoxville NightHawks News Release

Knoxville, TN- The Nighthawks opened their regular season tonight in Columbus, Georgia against the Lions.

Knoxville prepared this week for a battle against a Columbus (0-1) team that was out to prove themselves after a tough loss against Richmond (1-0) last week on the road. The Nighthawks were looking to see which of their players would step up after their own loss last week against the Alabama Hammers during a pre-season game.

Wide receiver, Ryan McDaniel, was one of the players that stepped up during tonight's game. McDaniel had a standout performance that ended with him having 4 touchdowns for the night.

The Nighthawks started off with the first touchdown of the game by wide receiver, Kelvin Thompson, from a 7 yard pass from quarterback, Tony Colston. The Lions Special Teams blocked the kick of Alex Walls for the extra point.

The Lions added to the score board by scoring an "uno" when the kickoff went through the uprights and then scored a touchdown.

Columbus scores first in the second half but the Nighthawks returned by putting their own touchdown on the scoreboard to make it 36-32, Lions.

Colston got sacked and fumbled the ball that led to a Lions touchdown. Colston retaliated by running the ball into the end zone to make the score 50-38.

Defensive back, Ginikachi Ibe had a stellar night with 2 interceptions for the night.

The Nighthawks had a 23 yard throw to McDaniel with only 11:42 left to cut the score down to 50-45 after a successful extra point by kicker, Alex Walls. McDaniel then ended his night with his 4th touchdown to bring the score within 5 points at 57-52.

With less than a minute left in the game, Columbus scores to increase their lead to 64-52. Knoxville answers with their own touchdown by wide receiver, Justin Craig, to make the score 64-59.

Knoxville will be on the road again next week against the Richmond Raiders, but will have their home opener at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum on Saturday, March 31st at 7:00pm against the Raiders.
