Laredo Bucks News Release


LAREDO, Texas – The Laredo Bucks went 2-0-1 last week picking up five of six points and improving to a CHL best 34-5-3 with 71 points. On Tuesday the Bucks set a franchise record for goals in a game in an 11-1 victory over Lubbock at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Friday the Bucks went on the road and beat Austin 4-1. Saturday night Odessa ended the Bucks 10-game win streak with a 3-2 shootout win in Odessa. Laredo returns home Wednesday against Corpus Christi. Face off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the LEC. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

· The phenomenon of Laredo Bucks hockey has grown so fast that it is drawing attention from all over the country. Last year CBS Evening News did a story about hockey on the border. This Wednesday night National Geographic will be at the LEC to take pictures.

NEXT UP

· The Bucks host Corpus Christi on Wednesday. Face off set for 7:30 p.m. at the LEC. Laredo travels to San Angelo on Friday and then visits New Mexico on Saturday.

BUCKS VS. UPCOMING OPPONENTS

CORPUS CHRISTI RAYZ · The Bucks are 8-2-0 against the Rayz. Laredo is 3-2 in Corpus Christi and 5-0 at home. The Rayz have never won a game at the LEC. The last meeting between the teams came in Corpus Christi on 01/16 as the Bucks won 3-1. The Bucks are 15-62 (24.2 %) on the man advantage against the Rayz, while Corpus Christi is 6-77 (7.8 %).

SAN ANGELO SAINTS · The Bucks are 4-0-1 against the Saints. Laredo is 3-0-0 at the LEC and 1-0-1 in San Angelo. The last meeting was at the LEC on 01/03 as the Bucks won 4-3 when Jeff Bes scored 94 seconds into overtime. The last three games in the season series have gone to overtime. The Bucks are 1-14 (7.1%) on the power play against the Saints, while San Angelo is 3-24 (12.5%)

NEW MEXICO SCORPIONS · This is the first regular season meeting of the year between the teams. The Scorpions beat the Bucks 5-4 in a shootout in the preseason. Last year the Bucks were 2-0-1 versus New Mexico.

BUCKS REPRESENT AT THE 2004 DODGE CHL ALL STAR

· The Bucks sent four players to the 2004 Dodge CHL All-Star Game in New Mexico last Thursday with forwards Jeff Bes and Brent Cullaton selected to the starting lineup. Bucks forward Patrik Nilson and defenseman Serge Dube were selected to the Southern Conference All-Star team as coach's picks. Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski led the Southern Conference team. Bucks forward Chris Grenville was selected, but did not participate as he and his wife were expecting the birth of their second child. Nilson replaced Grenville on the roster. Nilson had a pair of goals and two assists in the game. Laredo forward Jeff Bes had two assists while Brent Cullaton had one assist. Cullaton won the fastest skater competition in 14.28 seconds, while Nilson won the accuracy shootout contest by hitting four targets on just six shots in the skills competition. The Northern Conference beat the Southern Conference 12-9.

· The Bucks have topped the 30 shot plateau in 12 of the last 13 games and totaled 445 shots during, 34.23 per game. The lone exception was 01/09 when the Bucks were held to a season low 18 shots in Rio Grande Valley. The Bucks have totaled more than 30 shots in a game 30 times this season.

PRETTY GOOD BALANCE · The Bucks have played 42 games this year. Laredo has played 22 at home and 20 on the road. The Bucks just finished a stretch in which they played seven of nine games at home from 12/31 – 01/20. The Bucks are now in a stretch of four of five games on the road from 01/23 - 01/31.

HOLY MOLEY!!! WHAT A FRANCHISE RECORD

· The Bucks set a new franchise record with 11 goals in an 11-1 win over the Lubbock Cotton Kings on 01/20 at the LEC. Nine different players scored for the Bucks in the game. The previous record for goals in a game was eight, accomplished twice last year. The 11 goals represent the highest single game total in the CHL this year. The CHL record for goals in a game is held by Okalahoma City and Wichita, who each scored 16. OKC on 12/22/94, WIC on 10/17/97.

FRANCHISE RECORD EXTENDED

· The Bucks set a new franchise record with their 13th straight win on home ice 3-2 over Odessa on 01/17. Laredo extended the streak to 14 straight with an 11-1 win over Lubbock on 01/20. The previous streak of 12 straight at home included the final seven regular season games at home in 2002-03 and the first five of 2003-04.

RED LIGHT FLASHING

· The Bucks have scored 57 goals in the last 11 games (5.18 per) and gone 10-0-1.

POINTS MATTER

· The Bucks have recorded at least a point in 26 of last 28 games.

RED HOT BUCK

· Bucks forward Jeff Bes has recorded points in 17 straight games which is the longest streak in the CHL this year. He leads the CHL with 57 helpers on the season and 82 points.

ROAD WARRIORS

· Laredo has the best win percentage in the CHL on the road at .750 %, and their 14 road wins are tied for the most in the league. Last year the Bucks were 15-13-4 on the road; this year they are 14-4-2.

BUCKS WEEKLY GAME RECAPS

· 01/24/03 – SATURDAY – The Laredo Bucks battled from behind to gain a point before losing 3-2 in a shootout to the Odessa Jackalopes in front of 3,724 fans at Ector County Coliseum. In a goal tending duel Mike Gorman of Odessa stopped 36 of 38 shots and all four in the shootout to end the Bucks 10-game winning streak. The Bucks have recorded points in 26 of the last 28 games. They are 34-5-3 with a CHL best 71 points. David Guerrera was outstanding as he stopped 40 of 42 shots to get the Bucks a point. His eight game win streak came to an end as his record is now 19-3-1. FINAL SCORE Odessa 3, Laredo 2 in a shootout.

· 01/23/03 – FRIDAY – The Laredo Bucks picked up their 10th straight win with a 4-1 decision over the Austin Ice Bats in front of 4,589 fans at the Bat Cave. Four different players scored as the Bucks improved to 6-1-0 against the Bats this year. The Bucks are 34-5-2 with a CHL and Southeast Division best 70 points. Guerrera stopped 31 of 32 shots in yet another solid effort as he improved to 19-3-0. FINAL SCORE Laredo 4, Austin 1.

· 01/20/03 – TUESDAY – The Laredo Bucks crushed the Lubbock Cotton Kings 11-1 at the Laredo Entertainment Center in front of 5,676 fans. The Bucks set a franchise record for goals in a game as they netted 11 and won their ninth straight overall and 14th in a row at home. The Bucks improved to 33-5-2 and lead the CHL and Southeast division at 68 points. Bucks goalie David Guerrera stopped 14 of 15 shots to pick up his sixth straight win and improve to 18-3-0. FINAL SCORE Laredo 11, Lubbock 1.
