Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Odessa Jackalopes Scott Hillman and Matt Price combined for two Jackalopes goals 1:27 apart to rally and defeat the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 3-2 Tuesday night at the Ector County Coliseum in Odeesa. The loss ends the Bees three-game winning streak, and unfortunately pushes their road winless streak to four games.
Bees defenseman Jason Tessier, who provided the fireworks in the previous battle against Odessa with a season high 2 point performance, tallied the Bees first goal 3:27 into the game with an even strength goal. Tessier intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and transitioned it into a 3-on-2 advantage for the Bees. He started it off with a pass to his right to Bill Newson who took it down the right side with Tessier to his left and Roger Holeczy trailing. Newson passed the puck across the slots to his left to Tessier, who slammed it past Odessa goaltender Mike Gorman for his sixth goal of the season.
An odd man rush in the second period was taken advantage of by the Jackalopes with 6:32 remaining, as Odessa defenseman Adam Doyle fired a slap shot from the right circle that flew over the shoulder of Bees goaltender Jeff Levy and tied the contest up 1-1. The Bees defenders forced Doyle, who was leading a 3-on-2 rush, to take the puck to the net himself, and Doyle took advantage of the opportunity for his first goal of the season. The goal ended Levy's series shutout sequence at 86:47 against Odessa.
Bees rookie forward Dan Odegard regained the Bees lead 2:13 into the third period with a low slap shot from the low-point that snuck through the five-hole of Mike Gorman. That would be it for the Bees lead, as Scott Hillman took advantage of a Bees defensive collapse with 6:30 remaining in regulation. Jackalopes forward Sebastien Thinel fed the puck to Hillman unattended atop the right circle and Hillman skated in the right slot and flipped the puck over Levy to tie the game 2-2. The Jacks took the winning lead 1:27 later with a goal by Matt Price. Rio Grande Valley pulled Levy for the extra attacker and placed pressure on Jacks goaltender Mike Gorman, but Gorman was able to cover up a scramble while in the net as the horn sounded to preserve the Jackalopes win to extend their own winning streak to three games.
Odessa had all five of the game's power play opportunities, but the Bees defense was solid, not preventing any power play goals. The Bees have held Odessa to 0 for 10 in the power play department in the season series. For the first time this season, the Bees were without a power play opportunity.
The loss is the first regulation loss for the Bees when leading after the first period of play (11-1-1), and the Bees take only their second loss (14-2-0) when scoring first. The Killer Bees now head for their second stop on their season long six-game road trip with a stop in Wichita, KS for their northernmost trip of the season to face-off with the Wichita Thunder Friday night.
