Albany Firebirds News Release
ALBANY, NY â The 2002 Northeast Division Champion Albany ConQuest are pleased to announce that Lansingburgh High School's RB/DB, Marcel Youngs, has been selected as the recipient of the first annual Albany ConQuest High School Ironman of the Year Award, presented by KISS FM 102.3.
Youngs was selected as the winner by members of the local media, following a season-long campaign in which fans were allowed to vote at area high school football games or online at the team website www.albanyconquest.com. The fan's vote, which was garnered by Shenendahowah High's WR/DB Matt Burger with over 200 online votes, was counted as one vote, with each media member getting one vote. Mechanicville High's RB/LB Vince Marzano finished second overall in the voting and was the only nominee to receive more than one vote from the media besides Youngs.
Youngs, a 5'7 175 lb. Senior, had by far the most impressive stats of any player this football season. His 35 total touchdowns and 242 points led Section II, while he also tied for the lead in interceptions with seven. On October 18th against Ravena, Youngs put on one of the most impressive performances the state has ever seen. He finished the game with 252 yards rushing on 12 carries (five TD), caught a 57-yard touchdown pass, and returned two punts for scores (55, 60 yds). His eight total touchdowns and 48 points set a Section II single-game record. Youngs did not rush for less than two touchdowns in any single game this season, and ran for five in a game twice.
Youngs will be honored at a 12:30PM press conference on Tuesday, November 19th at Lansingburgh High School. The Knights are playing in the New York State Class B semi-finals, this Saturday, at Deitz Field in Kingston, NY. They advanced by beating defending state champions Peru High last Saturday night, 22-18, a team which had previously won 24 games in a row. Lansingburgh's head coach, Pete Porcelli, also serves as an assistant coach for the ConQuest during the af2 season.
The Conquest would like to thank KISS FM 102.3 and all of the fans that participated in this year's voting process.
