Rochester Lancers News Release
(Rochester, NY) - After a two-week break following an impressive road win at Harrisburg on December 6th, the Rochester Lancers (3-1) will return home to host their NYS Thruway rival Syracuse Silver Knights (2-3) on Saturday, December 20th at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial beginning at 1:00 p.m..
The Lancers, behind first year Head Coach Doug Miller have gotten off to their best start in franchise history by winning three of their first four matches. The second place club currently resides two-games behind division leader Baltimore. One reason for the improved start has been better play in their own end of the field. In their previous two games, the club has allowed just nine points against in matches against Detroit and Harrisburg. In goal for Rochester, Joe Kapinos continues to show well, allowing just 3.50 goals per game, good for third best in the league.
Syracuse will be busy this weekend as their match with the Lancers is not the only time they will take the field. Prior to their match on Saturday, the Silver Knights will host first place Baltimore at the OnCenter in Syracuse on Friday night. Syracuse, who is coached by Miller's former indoor and outdoor teammate Tommy Tanner, returns high-powered scorers Slavisa Ubiparapovic, Nelson Santana and Kenardo Forbes. In goal Bryann O'Quinn continues to be the last line of defense.
The match will be a good early season test for Rochester, who have lost 10 of their last 11 to their I-90 rivals. The last time the Lancers defeated the Silver Knights was a 12-10 win in Syracuse on January 21, 2012.
The Lancers have partnered with the Austin Everett Foundation to help a local teenager and his fight with cancer. Alex Turnquist, a 15 year old from Spencerport, plays soccer for Spencerport SC and is an avid Lancers fan. He is currently going through cancer treatments. The Lancers invited him as a special guest to today's practice, a crucial one that comes a day before their game against Syracuse. He was presented with his own Lancers jersey and will also walk out of the tunnel with his favorite player, Mauricio Salles at Saturday's game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Rochester Lancers car charger for their phone courtesy of the Ide Family of Dealerships.
