
Lancers Earn Win over Syracuse, 16-14

(Rochester, NY) - The Rochester Lancers (4-9) earned their fourth win of the season in an exhilarating match that gave the 7833 fans in attendance their money's worth. The back and forth match that ended with the home side withstanding a late surge to earn the win, 16-14. The Lancers got a pair of goals and five points from Jake Schindler and a pair of goals, including the game winner, from Mauricio Salles. Goalkeeper Marc Sotile made 11 saves and had one assist to get his first win in goal for the Lancers.
The Silver Knights opened the scoring a little over two minutes into the match when Nelson Santana set up Cory Elenio for the goal. The Lancers responded when Sotile's long ball found Andrew Hoxie in front of goal and was able finish to tie even the score. A couple of minutes later, Syracuse would retake the lead when Elenio set up Machel Millwood for a sliding goal, upping the visitors lead to 4-2. The Silver Knights quickly doubled their lead with a powerplay goal from Neto making the score 6-2. The Lancers answered back when Schindler created a turnover and walked around Syracuse goalkeeper Bryan O'Quinn to score and make it 6-4 Syracuse after one quarter of play.
The Lancers tied the score a little less than four minutes into the second quarter when Jefferson Dargout laid one off for Schindler, whose shot deflected in off a Silver Knights defender to make it 6-6. With three minutes left in the half Syracise responded when Santana took a top of the arc restart and set up Bo Jelovic for the goal. The Lancers then wasted little time in responding as Juninho earned a penalty shootout attempt and Doug Miller converted it. Less than thirty seconds later, the Lancers would take their first lead of the night when Salles blasted one into the upper ninety to make it 10-8 Lancers at the half.
Syracuse would get on the board first in the third quarter as Slavis regained the lead a couple of minutes later when Millwood set up Elenio for a blast from just inside the 3-point arc. In the back-and-forth game, the Lancers would level the game once again when Schindler took a corner restart and set up Stephen Basso for the header in front. Less than a minute later, Syracuse again took its turn when Nate Bordeau took advantage of a Lancers defensive miscue to make it 14-12 for the Silver Knights heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lancers refused to give in and even the game once again less than three minutes into the fourth quarter when Basso's long ball out of the back found Gary Boughton who turned and finished with his left foot. With just over six minutes left, the Lancers would push ahead when Miller's pass found Salles who finished with his favored left foot. The Lancers withstood a late push that gave Syracuse a restart from just beyond the three point arc with four seconds remaining. The shot was not allowed to get to Sotile giving the Lancers a hard fought 16-14 win.
The Lancers will return to MISL action next Friday, January 24th when they travel to face the Pennsylvania Roar at 7 pm. The Lancers will return home to the Blue Cross Arena onÃâàSunday, February 9th when they host the Milwaukee Wave atÃâà3 pm.
