Rochester Lancers News Release
(Harrisburg, PA) - The Rochester Lancers (7-8) went on the road and knocked off the Harrisburg Heat (1-13) by a score of 21-12. The win draws the Lancers to within one game of the Syracuse Silver Knights for second place in the MASL's Easter Division. The win also gives the Lancers their first back-to-back wins in over a month. The Lancers were led offensively by team captain Mauricio Salles (5 goals) and Andrew Hoxie (1 goal and 4 assists) with five points each. In goal, Marc Sotile made his 2014-15 debut in goal for the Lancers and made 10 saves in the winning effort. Also making his 2014-15 debut for the Lancers was fan favorite Elliot Fauske. The Lancers will get next weekend to rest before traveling to face the Baltimore Blast on Friday February 13th.
A little over three minutes into the match, the Lancers would strike first when Joey Tavernese set up Yakiel Perez for the 2-point goal. Less than four minutes later, the duo struck again with Tavernese again setting up Perez for the second time in the game, making the score 4-0 Rochester. A little over a minute later, Hoxie and Salles teamed up as Hoxie set up Salles for his first of five goals in the game. Later, on the power play, the Lancers increased their lead as Hoxie again found Salles for his second tally of the quarter. Then with as the opening frame wound down, Hoxie notched his third helper of the game when he set up Gary Boughton for the goal bring the Lancer lead to a commanding 10-0 after fifteen minutes of play.
The Heat would finally get on the board when Bradley Kerstetter scored a 3-point goal for the hosts, cutting the Rochester lead to 10-3. The next tally, increased the Lancer advantage as Salles tallied the hat trick on a goal off a restart. With less than four minutes left in the half, Harrisburg's Kenneth Fultz set up Tyler Witmer for the goal to cut the Lancers lead to 12-5 at halftime.
Harrisburg was the first the score during the third quarter, and made it a game momentarily when Witmer scored from just outside the 3-point arc to pull the Heat to within four points. A little over a minute later, Val Teixeira's corner kick set up Witmer who scored from just inside the 3-point arc for the natural hat trick, and a 12-10 game. Rochester regained their footing after that as Jeremy Ortiz set up Hoxie in the Heat penalty area and he slotted it home to end the Harrisburg run. With under sixty seconds remaining in the third, Salles corralled a Heat giveaway and put one past the keeper from beyond the 3-point arc to put the Lancers a 17-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Leadings 17-12 the Lancers team of Hoxie and Salles connected once again as Hoxie set up Salles for the goal, giving both five points in the game. Rochester added a late goal with the Heat goal empty in favor of the extra attacker. The score came when Boughton set up Tavernese on the counterattack for his first goal of the evening to make the final score 21-12 in favor of the Lancers.
