Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - A five-run lead was not enough Sunday, as the Jethawks fell, 8-7, to the Modesto Nuts at The Hangar. Modesto's seven-run sixth inning prevented Lancaster from sweeping a five-game series.
Lancaster (11-7, 44-44) scored the first five runs of the game. Carlos Herrera doubled with two outs in the third inning, and Colton Welker drove him in with a single to get the Jethawks on top. Welker extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and Herrera finished the night 3-for-5 with two doubles.
In the fourth inning, Brian Serven clubbed a two-run home run to extend Lancaster's lead. The JetHawks scored twice more in the fifth thanks in part to four Modesto errors.
Things changed in the sixth inning. Modesto (5-13, 35-53) knocked Lancaster starter Antonio Santos out of the game with five-straight hits to open the frame. Ben Bowden (1-2) entered with a two-run lead, but could not hold it. Kevin Santa doubled to bring the Nuts within one, and Nick Thurman hit a three-run home run to give Modesto the lead, 7-5.
Reggie McClain (3-6) earned the win, as he was the pitcher of record when the Nuts rallied in the sixth. Lancaster made things interesting against Modesto's usually stout bullpen with a Jacob Boisiokovic home run in the bottom of the eighth to trim the deficit to one.
Herrera led off the ninth inning with a single, but Colton Welker followed by grounding into a double play. Wyatt Mills earned the save with a strikeout of Vince Fernandez.
The JetHawks took four of five from the Nuts, and finish the season series with a record of 10-3. Lancaster is 24-17 against the North Division.
Lancaster begins a four-game series with Rancho Cucamonga at LoanMart Field Monday. Matt Dennis (6-8) is slated to start the opener against Leo Crawford (2-0). The Quakes have won a franchise-record 13-straight games. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
