Lady Eagles 2-1 over Richmond

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles (6-2-0, 18pts) hosted the previously undefeated Richmond Kickers Destiny tonight at Waddell Stadium. Charlotte came away with a 2-1 victory to take back the W-League Atlantic Division lead from Richmond.

The Lady Eagles looked solid in the first half controlling the match with strong defense and midfield play and an attack minded offense. Darcel Mollon and Heidi Drummond worked well together up front, creating several scoring chances. In the

Lady Eagles Forward Heidi Drummond scored one of two goals tonight in the Lady Eagles 2-1 victory.

16th minute of play Darcel and Heidi almost combined for goal number one. Mollon moved the ball down the right side to the end line and put a cross in to the top of the six yard box. Drummond was there , but she knocked it over the crossbar.

In the 24th minute of the match the Lady Eagles pressure paid off with a goal by Heidi Drummond. Darcel Mollon made a nice move to touch around her defender. She then passed to Drummond in the middle. Drummond took a shot and placed it nicely in the top right corner to take the 1-0 lead.

The first half ended with the Lady Eagles up 1-0. Charlotte out Richmond 10-2 in the first half.

Richmond had a few minutes of offensive to start the second half, but it was Charlotte that got the first goal of the second half. In the 50th minute, Darcel Mollon got the ball at the top of the Richmond 18 yard box. Mollon broke through the Richmond defense, forcing the keeper to come out. Darcel slotted a low hard shot inside the right post to take the 2-0 lead.

The Richmond Kickers Destiny had their chance to cut the Charlotte lead to one in the 58th minute. Lady Eagles goalkeeper Lindsay Deason fouled Richmond on a breakaway, bringing up a Richmond penalty kick. Sandra Anger stepped up to take the penalty kick. She tried to place in in on the right side, but Deason made the right move and was there to make the save.

Ashley Swinehart came close to adding a goal of her own for Charlotte in the 68th minute. Swinehart split through the Richmond defense on the breakaway. She took a shot from the top of the 18 yard box, looking for the lower right corner, but the shot drifted just wide.

The Richmond Kickers Destiny finally got on the scoreboard in the 85th minute. Kara Frederick scored the unassisted goal. The Charlotte defense had trouble clearing the ball and Frederick gained possession, she dribbled in and shot the ball into the lower right corner to pull within one goal of Charlotte. That was the last goal of the match as the Lady Eagles took the 2-1 victory and move back to the top of the W-League Atlantic Division.

The Charlotte Lady Eagles are on the road for their next game, facing the Carolina Dynamo Women on June 20th, 5:30 pm. June 30th is the Lady Eagles next home game when they will play host to the Cocoa Beach Expos. On June 24th, the Charlotte Eagles men's pro team will host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Waddell Stadium, 7:30 pm.
