Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- Further solidifying their offensive and defensive fronts, the Los Angeles Avengers have signed Trevor Hutton, Jason Stewart, Jemelle Cage and Charles Howard, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today. Each of the four players will be an Arena Football League rookie when training camp opens on Jan. 3, and they begin competing for roster spots as offensive/defensive linemen.
Hutton, Stewart and Cage each signed two-year contracts with the Avengers, while Howard inked a one-year deal.
Hutton (6-foot-1, 295 pounds) played in four games for the Indianapolis Colts as an offensive guard in 2004. Following that season, he was allocated to the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe. At Utah State University, Hutton was a preseason Outland Trophy candidate as a senior in 2003. He started in 22 consecutive games for the Aggies after transferring from Allan Hancock College (Santa Maria, Calif.), where he was a second-team Junior College All-America selection in 2001.
Stewart (6-1, 285) was on the Indianapolis Colts' active roster for one game this season (Sept. 18 vs. Jacksonville) as a defensive tackle. Last year, he spent some time on the Colts' practice squad. A four-year letterman and three-year starter along the defensive line at Fresno State University, Stewart was selected to the All-Western Athletic Conference first team as a senior in 2002, when he finished third on the team with 79 tackles, which included 16 for losses and five quarterback sacks.
Cage (6-1, 290) was a defensive end with the San Diego Chargers this past summer until he was released just prior to the start of the 2005 regular season. He played in 40 games at Louisiana Tech University, where he finished with 132 tackles, including 29 for losses of 118 yards. As a senior in 2004, Cage registered 7.5 sacks for losses of 47 yards.
Howard (6-3, 275) was signed by the Washington Redskins on May 2, 2005, and remained with the club as a defensive lineman until being released on Aug. 29. He was a four-year letterman at Florida State University. Howard played in 45 games for the Seminoles, finishing his collegiate career with 82 tackles and six sacks.
The Avengers will kick off their seventh season in the 20-year-old AFL at STAPLES Center on Sunday, Jan. 29, versus the Arizona Rattlers. Nine-game season ticket packages are on sale now. Please call 1-888-AVENGERS for more information or visit the team's official Website at www.laavengers.com.
