West Oahu CaneFires News Release
West Oahu received a stellar start from Kyle Bloom as the Pittsburgh Pirates prospect posted five scoreless innings, and led the CaneFires to an 8-2 victory over Honolulu tonight at Hans L'Orange Park.
Kyle Peter collected a game-high three hits, and Miles Durham drove in three to pace West Oahu. Teammate James Skelton doubled, tripled, drove in two runs, and the Detroit Tigers catcher boosted his batting average to .317 in the victory.
Jim Negrych provided the CaneFires with the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to score Greg Burns in the third inning. Durham then singled up the middle to score Peter, who had singled earlier in the inning, and put West Oahu up, 2-0. Durham came around to score the third run of the frame on Kala Ka'aihue's fielding error at first base on a ball hit by Skelton.
Cyle Hankerd tripled to lead off the sixth inning for West Oahu, and Skelton brought him in on a triple of his own, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Honolulu (13-8) got on the board as Ryo Hijirisawa tripled to lead off the eighth inning, and scored on a Chris Hatcher passed ball that came as Matt Inouye was intentionally walked.
But Durham afforded West Oahu (11-10) some breathing room with a two-run double in the ninth inning to score Negrych and Peter as the CaneFires went on to add four runs in the frame.
Bloom (2-0) notched the win, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing a hit and striking out eight.
Scott Shaw fell to 1-2 as the Sharks starter surrendered two earned runs on four hits through 2 2/3 innings.
The squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at 7 p.m. for the second contest of a three-game set.
