Komets Streak Into Final Week

ROCHESTER, MI--- The Fort Wayne Komets have been on fire as of late, extending their currently winning streak to five straight. The Komets have strung together wins in seven of their last nine games, including earning points in eight of those last nine. They are chasing the Muskegon Lumberjacks for the regular season championship, but the 'Jacks need just two points to earn the Huber Trophy. With their four win week, the Komets have secured home ice advantage throughout the playoffs, as the lowest seed they can finish is second.

Two Komet forwards had hat tricks in back-to-back contests over the weekend. First, Leo Thomas scored three even-strength goals in the Komets 5-2 win in Dayton Saturday night to earn his first hat trick as a Komet. The next night, Matt Syroczynski netted two even- strength and one power play goal in Fort Wayne's 8-4 win over Quad City, all of which were scored in the first period, to earn his second hat trick of the season.

One of the biggest games of the season for the PrairieThunder is Friday when they travel to Flint to face-off against the Generals. They need four points to wrap up their first playoff appearance in franchise history. The Generals are not going away without a fight, as they have racked up an 11-5-1-0 record in their last 17 games. However, if Bloomington wins Friday, the Generals will be eliminated from the Turner Cup Playoff contention.

Despite their 3-1-0-0 week, the Quad City Mallards are officially eliminated from the playoffs. The Mallards have put together a 28-35- 4-7 record in 74 games this season in their first year in the IHL. They have two remaining on the regular season, with their last home game slated for this Friday. The Mallards will wrap up their season on the road in Fort Wayne this Saturday.

Bloomington PrairieThunder (0-3-0-0)- The PrairieThunder needs one victory to clinch the club's first playoff spot in its four-year history and to set a club record for victories in a season. They will travel to Flint Friday to try to wrap up their first playoff spot with a win over the Generals, and knock them out of contention. Forward Zach Pearson surpassed his career mark for points in a season when he two against Muskegon. He currently has 46 points. The PrairieThunder finished its home season with a club record 21 victories. When Bloomington suffered a loss at Quad City on Saturday, it marked the first time all season, with the exception of the first game, that the team's record has been below .500. Each goal Craig Macdonald scores adds to his club record total. He has 44 and the previous record was 38 by Don Parsons.

Flint Generals (2-3-0-0)- The Generals enter the final week of the regular season just three points behind Bloomington for the fourth and final playoff spot. With a 2-3-0-0 record in Week 25, the Generals still made up ground in the standings as the PrairieThunder finished the week with a winless 0-3-0-0 record. Friday, Bloomington will travel to Flint for a must- win game for the Generals to stay in contention. The Generals have a 3-6-2-0 record against the PrairieThunder this season. Rookie defenseman Brandon Gentile is currently seventh among IHL defenseman in scoring with 30 points in 61 games played. That is 12 less games than leader Matt Krug, who had 45 points in 73 games. Flint will also face-off against Fort Wayne for their final game of the season Sunday. They have a 6-3-1-1 record against the Komets.

Fort Wayne Komets (4-0-0-0)- Muskegon has two games remaining and leads the Komets, who have a game in hand, by five points with a magic number of two for clinching the Huber Trophy. The second-place Komets reached 100 points for the fourth consecutive season and the sixth time in the last seven campaigns. P.C. Drouin has a five-game point and assist streak (3g, 8a). Leo Thomas (C) has points in four straight games (4g, 4a). Sean O'Connor (RW) has a three-game goal and point streak (4g, 2a). Frankie DeAngelis (D) has assists in three straight games (5a). Konstantin Shafranov (LW) passed his 200th Fort Wayne career assist in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Muskegon. Nick Boucher posted his third shutout of the season, and sixth as a Komet, Wednesday against Muskegon making 27 saves in a 3-0 win.

Muskegon Lumberjacks (2-1-0-1)- Of their 50 victories this season, the Lumberjacks have won 30 at home and 20 on the road. Muskegon's best day of the week this season has been Sunday, posting a mark of 11-1-0-1 while being undefeated on the Sunday road games at 4-0-0-1. Since being shut out 3-0 this past Wednesday at Fort Wayne, the Lumberjacks number one offense has connected on 17 goals for in the last three games, for a goals for average of 5.67. In his last three starts in the Muskegon goal, Matt Lundin has posted a goals against average of 1.95, recording a perfect record in that span (3-0-0-0). Rookie right wing J.T. Dahlinger's game winning goal in Sunday's 7-4 win at Flint represented his first-ever game winning goal in his pro career.

Port Huron Icehawks (3-1-0-0)- The Icehawks earned six of a possible eight points last week when they played four games in six days. They took two of three against Flint before winning a nail biter against Dayton with less than six seconds left in overtime Sunday. Sunday's win is the Icehawks' 45th of the year, setting a new team record for wins in a season. Newcomer Paul Cianfrini scored his first pro goal in Sunday's win with less than six seconds to play in overtime. Cianfrini joined the Icehawks early last week after his season with the OHL's Erie Otters ended. He has tallied a goal, two assists and a +3 plus-minus rating in four games with the Icehawks. The Icehawks were forced to part ways with goalie Adam Russo last week so that he may appear in another international tournament with the Italian national team.

Quad City Mallards (3-1-0-0)- Yesterday's loss to Fort Wayne eliminated the Mallards from playoff contention and ended the Mallards' three game winning streak. Chris Lipsett (28-36-64) reached 700 career points by scoring in the third period of last Thursday's win over Bloomington. Lipsett added another goal in yesterday's loss to Fort Wayne to lift his total to 701 points (332 goals, 369 assists). Patrick Levesque (30-35-65) snapped a seven-game goal scoring drought to score his thirtieth goal of the season in last Saturday's win over Bloomington. Levesque is now tied for fifth in the league in goals and tied for ninth in points. Rookie Addison DeBoer (2-2-4) scored his first career goal in last Wednesday's win in Dayton. Rookie Aaron Spotts (1-1-2) scored his first career goal in yesterday's loss to Fort Wayne.

Dayton Gems (0-4-0-0)- The Gems played four games in five days last week, dropping all four contests during Week 26. Saturday night, the Gems welcomed The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, who dropped the puck and auctioned a hockey stick autographed by defenseman, Iain McPhee. That evening the team also held an auction for the away jerseys. Derek MacIntyre continues to be a work horse. Derek has the most saves in the league with 1,540 and is tied for the most shutouts (three). MacIntyre will finish the season with the most games played in the IHL and will still be a rookie next season. The Gems rookies still hold four of the spots in the top 13 of IHL rookie scoring leaders. Rookies Jon Ornelas has not missed a game this season and Mike Vaskivuo has only missed one.
