Knoxville's Luke Sandler Named Bauer Player of the Week

Published on January 10, 2017 under SPHL (SPHL) News Release

HUNTERSVILLE, NC - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Luke Sandler of the Knoxville Ice Bears is the Bauer Player of the Week for January 2-8.

Sandler scored three goals, including one shorthanded, and added an assist in helping the Ice Bears to a pair of wins over Evansville this past weekend.

On Friday, the Chicago, IL native scored the Ice Bears' first goal and added an assist in a 4-3 shootout win over the Thunderbolts. In the rematch on Saturday, Sandler scored just 2:06 into the game and added a shorthanded goal early in the third period to propel Knoxville to a 7-2 win over Evansville. Sandler's shorthanded goal was the last of three the Ice Bears scored in the game, matching the league record held by four other teams. Ironically, the last time a team scored three shorthanded goals in a game was exactly five years earlier, when Augusta turned the trick on January 7, 2012 and defeated Fayetteville by the same 7- 2 score.

Acquired from Evansville on November 2, Sandler is currently tied for third in the SPHL with 12 goals and has scored in five of his last six games. Now in his second professional season, Sandler split last year between Louisiana (40 gp, 15g, 13a) and Peoria (8 gp, 1g), while also earning a call-up to ECHL Bramp- ton where he scored one goal and added 11 penalty minutes in 10 games.

Also Nominated: Spencer Bacon, Columbus (37:29, 1 ga, 24 saves), Dave Williams, Evansville (2 gp, 2a), Sean Bonar, Fayetteville (1-0-0, 2 ga, 23 saves), Jordan Wood, Huntsville (2 gp, 4a, +3), Troy Pass- ingham, Macon (1-0-0, 1 ga, 32 saves), Dylan Fox, Mississippi (2 gp, 1g, 1a, gwg), Matt Zenzola, Pen- sacola (0-1-0, 2 ga, 21 saves), Connor Gorman, Peoria (2 gp, 1g, 2a) and Massimo Lamacchia, Roanoke (2 gp, 5a)
