Knighthawks Sign Veteran Kevin Fines
March 17, 2011 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, March 17)... The Rochester Knighthawks did not make a move on trade deadline day Monday, but they did make two moves today on the final day of free agency. Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres signed Kevin Fines to the practice squad. In a related move, the Knighthawks released Holdon Vyse.
"I am excited to get another shot," said Fines. "I will get a couple of practices and hopefully will move up and go from there." Fines, 30, has not put his stick down since January when he was in Knighthawks Training Camp, starting a developmental program in his hometown of Sarnia, Ontario.
"We just got kicked off with a skills weekend," he said "We are trying to get new kids interested in lacrosse."
Fines enters his seventh season in the NLL in 2011 and second in Rochester. In 2010, the defenseman/transition player was named the Knighthawks' Unsung Hero. The Sarnia, Ontario, native returns to Rochester, where he played last season, after being acquired in 2009 from the Minnesota Swarm. In his career, he has also played for teams in Chicago, Toronto and San Jose. This summer, he was a member of Major Series Lacrosse's Peterborough Lakers and won the Mann Cup. Fines won a Minto Cup with the Burnaby Lakers in 2002.
Vyse, another Six Nations player, rounds out the Knighthawks on the roster. Vyse made his professional debut on March 5th against the Buffalo Bandits. The 22-year-old defenseman/transition man was originally the Buffalo Bandits' fourth-round selection (37th overall) in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft. In 2010, he was a member of the Ohsweken Aces that captured the Nations Cup Nations, where he played alongside Jamieson, Smith and Point.
The Knighthawks will host the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday, March 26th at The Blue Cross Arena. The first 5,000 fans will receive a Knighthawks tote bag. The Knighthawks have partnered with Urology Associates of Rochester and will wear special jerseys on Men's Health Night. The jerseys will be raffled off, in-arena and online, to help fight prostate cancer. The 7:35 p.m. game will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and www.thezone941.com.
