Knighthawks Fighting for Third with Wings in Town Tonight

March 26, 2011 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release

With one month left in the National Lacrosse League regular season, the Rochester Knighthawks will host the Philadelphia Wings tonight in a contest that has playoff implications. The fourth and fifth place teams in the East will try to move one step closer to a postseason berth. The 7:35 p.m. game at The Blue Cross Arena will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and www.thezone941.com.

The game falls on Men's Health Night as the Knighthawks and the Urology Associates of Rochester team up to raise funds to benefit Zero - The Project to end Prostate Cancer and The Lipson Cancer Center at Rochester General. The Knighthawks will wear special blue jerseys, signifying prostate cancer awareness. Half of the jerseys will be auctioned off at the arena, while the other half will be auctioned off online at www.GoBuyRochester.com.

The Knighthawks (5-5) are tied for third with the Boston Blazers (6-6) in the East Division. Rochester is also one and half games ahead of the Wings (4-7) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division. The game is the second of three meetings between the two teams. The Knighthawks defeated Philadelphia, 11-6, on February 5th behind a 10-point night (1+9) from Shawn Evans. Rochester is 21-15 all-time against the Wings.

Rochester has had three weeks off since its last game, which was an 11-8 loss to the Buffalo Bandits. Rochester was led by a six-point (3+3) effort from Jordan Hall, who now has a three-game point streak and 11 points (3+8) over that stretch. Evans leads the team with 41 points (14+27). Pat McCready is second among defensemen with 14 points (5+9). Goalie Matt Vinc is fifth in the NLL in goals-against average (10.37), tied for third in save percentage (.789) and fourth in saves (377). Last week, the K-Hawks added Kevin Fines to the practice squad. He enters his seventh season in the NLL in 2011 and second in Rochester. In 2010, the defenseman/transition player was named the Knighthawks' Unsung Hero. This summer, he was a member of Major Series Lacrosse's Peterborough Lakers and won the Mann Cup. Fines won a Minto Cup with the Burnaby Lakers in 2002.

The Wings are on a three-game losing streak to fall into fifth place in the East Division. In their last game, the Wings fell 13-7 to the Calgary Roughnecks on March 5th. Athan Iannucci led Philadelphia with five points (1+4). He also leads the team with 56 points (27+29) and ranks 10th in the NLL in points. He stands four assists away from 100 in his career and is three points away from 250. Forward Drew Westervelt is riding a 10-game point streak and has four goals and 12 assists in his last four games. Former Knighthawk Matt Zash made his Wings' debut on March 5th after being acquired that same day by Philadelphia. In another player move, Taylor Wray has rejoined the team after being placed on the active roster for the team's five remaining regular season games.

The Knighthawks will travel to play the Boston Blazers at the TD Garden on Saturday, April 2nd. The 7:35 p.m. game will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and www.thezone941.com.
