Knighthawks Capture Three of Four Player Awards
Published on April 7, 2004 under National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
The National Lacrosse League announced that Rochester Knighthawks forward Shawn Williams captured the Overall and the Offensive Player of the Week awards for Week #15. Williams scored six goals and picked up seven loose balls in a 13-8 win over the Philadelphia Wings that clinched a playoff berth for the Knighthawks. A loss would have eliminated Rochester from playoff contention and ended their streak of nine consecutive playoff appearances.
Williams is one of only three players to earn the Overall Player of the Week honors twice this season. (Shawn Williams, Rochester â Weeks 13 & 15, John Tavares, Buffalo - Weeks 6 & 8, Jim Veltman, Toronto â Weeks 12 & 14). The Rochester forward is also the only player to capture the Offensive Player of the Week Award more than once this season, winning it four times (Weeks â 6,10,13, &15).
Rochester Knighthawks Goaltender Pat O'Toole was named the Defensive Player of the Week for Week # 15. O'Toole allowed eight goals and recorded 34 saves in the Rochester victory. O'Toole's performance between the pipes helped lead the Knighthawks over the Wings 13-8 and into the playoffs. This is O'Toole's second Defensive Player of the Week award this season, having also won in Week #8.
Colorado Mammoth forward Curtis Smith won the Rookie of the Week award for Week #15. Smith scored three goals and added an assist for four points and collected five loose balls in a 17-10 win over the Anaheim Storm on Saturday. This is Smith's first weekly player award.
