KiXX Travel To Monterrey for Must Win Game
April 2, 2008 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Philadelphia KiXX News Release
Philadelphia, PA, April 2, 2008 - The defending MISL Champion Philadelphia KiXX will round out the 2007-08 regular season with a road trip to Monterrey and California this weekend. The KiXX will be in Monterrey on Thursday, April 3 to face La Raza at 10:35pm ET, and then in California on April 5 to play the Cougars at 10:15pm ET. Philadelphia is currently 1.5 games behind the New Jersey Ironmen. The KiXX and Ironmen are the final two teams in the MISL whose postseason fate has yet to be determined, and it could come down to the final day of the regular season, April 5. New Jersey has one game remaining, Friday, April 4 against the Baltimore Blast. The KiXX need Baltimore to defeat New Jersey, and the KiXX need to win out. This scenario would mean a 14-16 record for each the KiXX and Ironmen. Philadelphia has beaten New Jersey in all three games the two teams have played against each other this season, thus the KiXX would be awarded the final playoff spot for owning the tiebreaker.
Philadelphia traveled to Monterrey for the third game of the season, where they dropped a 17-10 decision to the expansion La Raza. Jose Birche recorded a hat trick, including a three-point goal for seven points in the win. Two weeks later in Philadelphia, the KiXX avenged their loss with a 15-13 win. Aaron Susi scored a goal and two assists and was credited with the game-winner. On March 1, the KiXX dropped an overtime decision to Monterrey 10-8, despite a hat trick from Tony Donatelli. Monterrey's rookie goalkeeper Jose Bontii stopped 14 of 18 shots in the win.
Monterrey is led by two familiar faces for the KiXX in Genoni Martinez and Dino Delevski. Both were key members of the 2007 KiXX Championship team. Martinez was named the MISL Defender-of-the-Year for his efforts with Philadelphia, and currently leads La Raza with 23 assists and 64 blocks. Delevski, a former League MVP, leads the entire League with 41 goals in just 27 games. The two were traded to Monterrey during the off-season; in return Philadelphia received Monterrey's first four draft picks in the 2007 MISL Expansion Draft. The KiXX went on to select Aaron Susi, Angel Rivillo, and Gaston Pernia, who they later traded to Orlando for Jonathan Steele.
