(PHILADELPHIA)â The Chicago Storm are proving to be the giant killers early into their inaugural Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) season. With today's 7-4 win over the Philadelphia KiXX, the Storm have knocked off Milwaukee and Baltimore; teams that have won the last four MISL Championships.
Chicago's Novica Marojevic (2G, 1A) led all scorers and proved to be one of many players that gave the KiXX fits all afternoon.
Goalkeeper Danny Waltman turned away 11 shots in earning the win.
"They're a very good expansion team" said Philadelphia player-coach Don D'Ambra.
"(Chicago) is a skillful team; they're fast, they're fit, and they have smart players."
"I don't think teams are expecting that off the start."
After trading goals in the opening quarter, Chicago jumped out to a lead in the second quarter they would not surrender the remainder of the afternoon.
Goals by Leo Pernia and former KiXX midfielder Andy Guasteferro confounded a Philadelphia squad that couldn't seem to find their rhythm.
Kevin Sloan narrowed the Chicago lead to 3-2 with a restart goal at 6:39 of the second but the Storm grabbed the two-goal cushion going into half-time.
Ze Roberto brought the home team back to within one goal early in the third but goals by Costea Decu and Matthew Stewart left the KiXX looking at their largest deficit of the season at 7-3.
Wasted in the loss was the two goal effort of Philadelphia's John Barry Nusum.
D'Ambra refused to allow fatigue to be a factor in the loss pointing out that (Chicago) "played last night and grabbed a big win against Baltimore."
"We didn't play well defensively, we weren't disciplined offensively, and we didn't do the things that we talked about doing in our game plan."
At the other end of the hall, an excited Storm locker room had plenty to be excited about with back-to-back road wins against the Baltimore Blast and the KiXX.
"We have guys with indoor experience and those with no indoor experience but we felt they were the right group of guys," said Storm Head Coach, Frank Klopas.
"We believe in ourselves...this is a great win for our guys."
