KiXX Defeat Kansas City, 7-6, in School-Day Game

Kansas City, MO, February 9, 2005 – The Philadelphia KiXX (15-8) defeated the Kansas City Comets (8-11) 7-6 in front of a school-day crowd of 10,514 patrons at Kemper Arena today. KiXX midfielder Edgar Bartolomeu registered the game-winning goal, for the second consecutive contest, at 14:04 of the fourth quarter. Peter Pappas (13-7) earned the victory between the posts for the KiXX, turning away 21 of the 27 shots he faced, while Vlatko Andonovski took the loss as the sixth attacker for Kansas City.

KiXX player/coach Don D'Ambra opened the scoring with an unassisted tally at 2:28 of the first quarter. D'Ambra then found Gloucester Township, NJ native Jeff Moore in front of the net for an easy score to extend the club's advantage to 2-0 at 4:29 of the period; the assist marked the 150th feed of D'Ambra's 11-year indoor career. Comets midfielder Casey Stevens cut into the lead, 2-1, with a restart goal from Andonovski at 6:03. KiXX player/assistant coach Kevin Sloan then found the back of the net on a restart pass from D'Ambra to regain Philadelphia's two-point advantage at 9:40 of the stanza. The teams exchanged scores to conclude the opening period with the KiXX holding a 4-2 lead; Philadelphia's Joel Shanker struck first with an unassisted score at 13:26, before Stevens again connected with Andonovski for their second restart combination with only four seconds remaining (14:56) in the quarter.

Kansas City's James Koehler registered the only goal of the second quarter, a restart score on a feed from defender Jeff Davis at 12:05 of the period, to pull the Comets within one, 4-3, entering the half.

The Comets continued to roll, as former Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) MVP Dino Delevski recorded the team's third unanswered score to knot the game at 4-4 at 7:32 of the third stanza. Philadelphia's Damien Pottinger closed out the third quarter with an unassisted goal at 13:53 to regain the club's one-point advantage, 5-4.

Sloan notched his second tally of the day on a pass from teammate Edgar Bartolomeu to provide the KiXX with a two-goal cushion, 6-4, at 4:25 of the final quarter. Kansas City pulled back within one, 6-5, at 10:54 when Andonovski registered a power-play goal off the restart from Delevski; the Comets received the one-man advantage courtesy of a two-minute boarding infraction called on defender Chris Fehrle. Bartolomeu then lengthened the team's advantage to two, 7-5, with an unassisted score, that proved to be the game winner, at 14:04. Former KiXX forward Goran Hunjak pulled the Comets back within one on a pass from Delevski at 14:56, but Philadelphia held on to earn a 7-6 victory.

Notes: KiXX player/coach Don D'Ambra led all scorers with three points on one goal and a pair of assists, extending his point streak to six games. His first-quarter pass to newcomer Jeff Moore marked the 150th assist of his 11-year career. Player/Assistant Coach Kevin Sloan notched a pair of scores today; the native of Columbia, Maryland has now accounted for eight of the club's 20 total goals in the last three contests.
