Alec Kirschner has played only two games so far for the Whalers this season but he has already made his presence felt in a huge way. Kirschner had two goals and scored the game winner in the shootout as the Whalers defeated the Danville Dashers Sunday night 4-3. Mike Brown made 50 saves to earn the victory.
Dustin Skinner opened the scoring at 9:45 of the first period on a powerplay goal, his 18th of the season. Skinner's wrist shot from just outside the slot appeared to deflect off of one of the Whalers penalty killers and beat Mike Brown on the blocker side to give the Dashers the early lead. The Whalers would answer at 16:15 of the first on the second goal in two days by Alec Kirschner. Phil Aucoin won the battle for the puck just outside the Dashers blueline and slid a pretty pass across to kirschner who buried it top shelf to tie the game at one.
Paul Weisser would score his first goal of the season to give the Dashers the lead back at 13:25 of the second. On a delayed penalty call Henry Coxe wristed a shot towards the goal that Weisser deflected past Brown. Skinner(19th) would bury his second powerplay goal of the game at 17:19 of the second giving the Dashers a two goal advantage. Alec Kirschner would add his second goal of the game and third in two games on a penalty shot with 1:08 left in the second to cut the Dasher's lead to one. Mike Atkinson was taken down on a breakaway by Joe Pace which lead to the penalty shot.
Phil Aucoin would score his 4th goal of the season on the powerplay at 8:16 of the third period to tie the game at 3. After a scoreless overtime, the Whalers and Dashers went 8 rounds in the shootout with kirschner scoring both goals including the winner.
Jacob Rin made 46 saves in his first start of the season. With the loss, the Dashers' winning streak was stopped at four games. These two teams will play the second of a back to back tomorrow afternoon at 5pm. Tickets are free to children and students.
Game Notes: There were two fights in the first period, the second one between Anthony Pisano (6'6") and Chris Affinati (5'8"). The two received a standing ovation from the crowd after the scrap.... Dustin Skinner now has nine goals and seven assists in his last six games... Phil Aucoin has nine points in his first four games with Danbury... The Whalers improved to (2-4) versus Danville this season... The Whalers killed off a four minute double minor penalty to Kamil Vavra with 6:03 left in the third.
