Minnesota Thunder News Release

CINCINNATI--On an evening when severe thunderstorms rolled into the Greater Cincinnati area, the Minnesota Thunder rolled into the Xavier University Soccer Complex and scored the lone goal in a weather-shortened exhibition match against the Cincinnati Kings. The Thunder, from the First Division of the United Soccer Leagues, scored 15:20 into the first half on a goal by Nathan Knox, with the assist by Tyrone Gordon. The Kings managed four shots on goal to Minnesota's one before lighting around the Xavier University campus forced the game to be called just before the end of the first half. "We played great in our defensive half," said Coach Jon Pickup. "The ball just didn't bounce our way on the lone goal. On the offensive end, we ran into the same trouble, missing some easy shots in front. But we held our own against First Division competition." The game was a fundraiser for the parents of Michael Weidner of St. Bernard, a 10-year old soccer player who died in January. The Kings play another exhibition match Saturday afternoon at Town & Country against Northern Kentucky University before opening regular season Second Division play on the road Friday, April 21 against last year's league champion, the Charlotte Eagles. and Saturday, April 22 against the Richmond Kickers.
