CAPTAINS

In hockey, each team has three individuals on the ice to serve as liaisons between the officials and the team and they are known as "Captains". Of the three, two serve as Assistant or Alternate Captains and they wear the "A" over the left chest of the jersey, and one serves as the Captain and wears the "C" over the left chest of the jersey. Not only does the team captain communicate with the officials over any penalties and discussions requiring a team representative, but he also serves as a vital leader in the dressing room and as a decision maker on team matters. This season, the Bees have announced that Sean Gillam will serve as the Team Captain and Josh Mizerek and Ryan Shmyr will wear the "A."

TEE EM' UP

The Killer Bee Foundation, a 501(c)3 non profit organization that contributed over $52,000 to numerous non-profit organizations in the Rio Grande Valley, hosted the inaugural "Slap Shots & Tee Shots Golf Tournament" last season and the event was sold out with the amount of teams, making the event a great success. Entry fees for the three-man teams are set for $600. Individual players may register for $250 and hole sponsorship can is possible through a $100 donation. The tournament will consist of a maximum of 36 teams and several holes will feature prize destinations, including golf trips to Pinehurst (Pinehurst, NC), The Homestead (Hot Springs, VA), Barton Creek Resort/Spa (Austin, TX), Firestone Country Club (Akron, OH), Tampa Palms Golf/Country Club (Tampa, FL), Vista Vallarta Golf Club (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico), Morgan Run Resort/Club (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) and Cozumel Country Club (Cozumel, Mexico). Notes: The Killer Bees open up the regular season Saturday night on the road in Austin, as they battle with the Ice Bats. This will be the second consecutive year the Bees have started the regular season on the road after losing 3-1 in last season's opener in San Angelo. The Bees are 8-4-0 all-time against the Bats and 2-4-0 at the Travis County Expo Center. Bees returning all-star Bill Newson led the series in scoring with 12 points (5g,7a). Austin was led by Brent Hughes, who is currently a member of the Amarillo Gorillas, in the season series (4g,4a,8pts), but they return Kelly Smart, who posted 7 points (3g,4a) against the Bees last season. In net, the Ice Bats feature the goaltending tandem of Peter Brady and Matt Barnes, which is the same tandem that led the Bats to the 2003 President's Cup Championships. The Bees have never faced either of the goaltenders. Bees goaltender Jeff Levy received all the decisions (8-4-0) in net last season against the Bats. Vezina saw 29:29 of time last season against the Bats and was flawless. Last season, the Killer Bees held the Bats power play unit to 5.2% (3/58) on the man advantage, while scoring 4 shorthanded goals.
