September 23, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

HIDALGO, TEXAS --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced the addition of three defensemen to the 2008-09 training camp roster. Stephen Burns, Cody Cole and Chad Swartzentruber will be in uniform when training camp opens on October 6.

Stephen Burns spent the last four seasons at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to that, he was a three-year member of the Newmarket Hurricanes (Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League). The 23-year-old's amateur totals include 191 games played, 32 points (5-31-36) and 207 PIM. The 6-foot-0, 205-pound Newmarket, Ontario, native also competed in track and field and won the NCAA Div. III national championship in the javelin throw.

Cody Cole, 23, is a 5-foot-10, 200-pound St. Catherines, Ontario, native who played the last three seasons at Buffalo State College. In 75 career games, he collected 28 points (8-20-28) and 100 PIM. He captained the team the last two seasons.

Chad Swartzentruber comes to the Bees after spending last season in the Southern Professional Hockey League. He split the season between the Jacksonville Barracudas and Columbus Cottonmouths. All totaled, the 22-year-old played in 54 games and posted 37 points (9-28-37) and 66 PIM. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Baden, Ontario, product played two seasons for the Elmira Sugar Kings (Ontario Hockey Association-Junior B). He received the James Austin Memorial Trophy for being the team's top defenseman in 2005-06.

"We have eight defensemen coming to camp and only six jobs available," Killer Bees Head Coach Chris Brooks explained. "These three kids have to prove they can play at this level and that they deserve a spot on this team. The intangibles are there. Now they have to translate that to the ice in camp."

The Killer Bees open their sixth season at Dodge Arena on October 18 vs. the Rocky Mountain Rage. The first 1000 kids through the doors will receive a Killer Bees jersey courtesy San Juan Pharmacy and KRGV NEWSCHANNEL 5. Season tickets are available now by calling 956-843-PUCK (7825).
