HIDALGO, TEXAS --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced that goaltenders Brad Phillips and Dan Rosen have signed with the team for the 2010-11 hockey season
Phillips, 21, is a 2007 draft pick of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers (7th round, 182 overall) out of the NCAA Division 1 University of Notre Dame. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound backstop saw action in five games as a freshman in 2007-08, going 4-1-0 with a 1.53 goals against average (GAA), a .923 save percentage and one shutout. A knee injury sidelined him during the 2008-09 campaign, but he return last season to play in 10 games, posting a 2-3-3 mark with a 2.47 GAA, a .911 save percentage and one shutout.
"I'm excited to begin my pro career with the Killer Bees," Phillips said. "I know from talking to people around the game that it's a great atmosphere."
Before Notre Dame, the Wyandotte, Mich., native spent two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. During the 2006-07 season, he appeared in 24 games for the Under-18 team, going 15-5-2 with a 2.33 GAA and a .913 save percentage along with a pair of shutouts.
Rosen, 23, spent the last four seasons at Brown University, a NCAA Division 1 program in Providence, R.I. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Syosset, N.Y., native appeared in 76 games for the Bears from 2006-10. Overall he posted a 16-39-11 record, a .915 save percentage, and a 3.29 GAA. Statistically, his best season came as a freshman when he posted a 9-12-4 record along with a .920 save percentage and a 2.74 GAA. He earned the Kevin R. Pope Memorial Trophy as the team's most outstanding rookie as voted by teammates.
"The level of play is something I'm looking forward to," Rosen said. "I like what Coach Brooks is trying to put together and I know I'll have to compete hard in camp to claim a spot."
Before playing collegiately, Rosen played four seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Waterloo Blackhawks and Green Bay Gamblers.
"Both Brad and Dan are young, hungry, talented goalies that come highly recommended," Killer Bees Head Coach Chris Brooks said. "I am excited to have them both joining our team for this upcoming season."
