Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, June 30, 2005) - The Richmond Kickers (8-4-2, 26 points) host the Puerto Rico Islanders (4-5-3, 15 points) this Saturday, July 2nd at the University of Richmond Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The Kickers return home after two straight weeks on the road, which includes a 3-1 loss last Friday night in Puerto Rico.

Saturday night's contest will be the final regular season affair between these two teams. The Kickers are looking to rebound as they are winless in the past four games (0-3-1) and last won a month ago on May 30th against the Charleston Battery (2-0). Richmond started the season on a strong note, racing to the top of the USL First Division standings with an 8-1-1 record but have since only been able to gain one point in four contests, regardless Richmond still rest atop the standings.

Injury Update

Over the past three weeks the Kickers have slowly overcome the injury bug and look to finally be close to full strength. Defenders Tony Williams & Chris Fox, and forward McColm Cephas all look to be healthy and available for selection into the squad. Kickers' midfielder Joey Worthen however, is doubtful with a quad strain.

Players to Watch:

Kickers: Rookie forward Robert Ssejjemba provided a spark for the Kickers last week in Puerto Rico tallying the lone goal and creating a number of dangerous scoring chances, he now has two goals in 11 appearances for the Kickers. Forward Matthew Delicate leads the Kickers in scoring and continues to reside at the top of the points table in the league with 18 points in 14 games played, despite not having earned a point in the last four games. Midfielder Mike Burke is second in scoring for the team with 3 goals and 2 assists for seven points. Kickers' midfielder Richie Williams was suspended for last Friday's tilt in Puerto Rico due to an accumulation of yellow card points (reaching the 21-point USL suspension plateau) and did not make the trip. However, he will be available for selection for this weekend's match. Goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale leads the league in wins (8) and saves (53) and is ranked in the top five in all seven USL goalkeeper categories.

P.R. Islanders: Forward Corey Woolfolk leads Puerto Rico with 7 goals (14 points) and is tied for fourth in the league. Woolfolk scored the third goal in last weekend's 3-1 win over Richmond with an entertaining bicycle kick. Forward Mauricio Salles is second on the team with 5 goals (10 points) and rests in eighth in the league standings. Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, on season long loan from the NY/NJ Metrostars of Major League Soccer, had a solid outing against the Kickers in Puerto Rico last weekend with three clutch saves in the second half, and sits in fourth in the league with 50 saves.

This Saturday night is Franco's night, where fans can enter a drawing to win clothing from Franco's Fine Clothier. Gates open at 5:30pm as there will be the salsa band "Rayo" entertaining on the concourse prior to the game.
