Kickers Embark on Two Game Road Trip

June 26, 2013 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Kickers begin a month-long road swing this weekend, kicking off the second half of the USL PRO season with a back-to-back trip to Orlando City and VSI Tampa Bay FC on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, respectively. Both matches will be broadcast live from Orlando's Citrus Bowl and Tampa's Plant City Stadium on USLnation.com.

Playing 11 of their first 12 games at home, the Kickers embark on this weekend's road trip undefeated on the regular season, most recently battling the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Reserves to a 1-1 draw at City Stadium. Conceding an early goal, the Kickers rallied from the deficit when Joseph Ngwenya buried the equalizer in the second half. Outshooting the MLS Reserves team 10-3, the home side was denied twice by the woodwork after the 90th minute to take a point in their first-ever USL PRO/MLS interleague match-up.

Richmond and Orlando meet for the first time this season, with the two-time regular season champions holding the five-game series advantage 1-3-1. The two clubs last met in Orlando on April 28, 2012 when the Kickers stole a point from the Citrus Bowl with a scoreless draw.

Orlando are back for regular season action for the first time since a 2-0 victory over Antigua Barracuda FC on June 9. In the meantime, the USL PRO leaders handed a 1-0 upset to Major League Soccer's Sporting Kansas City in the U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round and take on the Chicago Fire in a Quarterfinals match-up Wednesday night before returning to the Citrus Bowl to host the Kickers Saturday.

Following Saturday's game, the Kickers continue the weekend gauntlet 24 hours later when they face VSI Tampa Bay FC for the first time in history. The USL PRO expansion franchise returns to Plant City Stadium after a four-game road stint, most recently holding the defending USL PRO Champions Charleston Battery scoreless last week, one day after dropping a narrow 1-0 loss to the Charlotte Eagles.

With a 10-1-2 regular season record, Orlando reside six points ahead of third-place Richmond and nine points ahead of fifth-place Tampa. The Kickers finish the two-game series with the USL PRO heavyweights in Richmond when they host Tampa on Sunday, July 28 before concluding the 2013 regular season against Orlando on Wednesday, August 14.
