Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond Kickers (6-16-3) were downed by six goals from Louisville City FC (13-4-7) at City Stadium Saturday night. The visitors jumped to a 2-0 first half lead behind goals from Cameron Lancaster and George Davis IV. Louisville put on four more second half goals from José Carranza, Niall McCabe and a brace from Luke Spencer.
The first chance of the night came from Louisville in the 9th minute. José Carranza picked up control of the ball at the top right corner of the Richmond box. He floated the ball in towards the far post as Paolo DelPiccolo made a run in for the header, sending his shot up and over the goal.
Cameron Lancaster looked to get on the board in the 14th minute. George Davis IV tried to create an option up the right side, but decided to reset and played the ball back for Pat McMahon. He squared a pass to James Sands in the center of the field. He looked up to see Lancaster in place and slotted the ball through. His shot went wide of Trevor Spangenberg and the Kickers goal.
Richmond would earn a chance from a set piece in the 21st minute. Brian Shriver was looking to find an option at the top of the Louisville box, and as he turned James Sands wrapped his arm around him drawing the foul and setting up the free kick about 25 yards from goal. Shriver stood over the free kick, and looked to go to for the upper 90 as Louisville keeper Greg Ranjitsingh leaped to deny the goal.
Prince Agyemang had a chance from long range to get Richmond on the board in the 30th minute. Luiz Fernando made a run up the left flank after a couple of nifty moves to get around two defenders, Fernando spotted Agyemang in space. With no one pressuring, Agyemang put a laser of a shot on target only to be thwarted by Ranjitsingh in goal.
The deadlock was broken in the 33rd minute from a free kick for Louisville. Mallan Roberts tried to prevent José Carranza from getting a chance off, as the referee blew for a foul and a free kick 25 yards from goal. Lancaster powered his shot to the upper left corner of goal and past a diving Trevor Spangenberg.
George Davis IV doubled the Louisville lead just three minutes later. Shaun Francis received the ball on the left sideline and quickly sent in a cross, as Cameron Lancaster got a head to the ball and tipped it to Davis IV. He took a quick touch around Austin Yearwood and slotted it past Spangenberg.
A third goal for the visitors came in the 58th minute. Niall McCabe fed the ball up the left flank for Shaun Francis making an overlapping run. He continued his run towards the Richmond goal, playing a pass back towards the penalty spot. José Carranza met the ball and just needed to redirect it into the goal.
Luke Spencer came on in the second half and made an immediate impact scoring in the 78th minute. Ilija Illic received the ball at the midfield line and quickly turned to feed the ball up for Spencer. He was able to get through the Kickers backline. Spangenberg came off his line to try and make a stop as Spencer took a touch around the keeper. That left him with an open net to score the fifth goal of the night.
Spencer would not be done, scoring a brace just four minutes later. Shaun Francis changed up the attack for Louisville, picking out Niall McCabe on the left sideline. He could not get around Matt Bolduc pressuring, and found Paolo Delpiccolo making a run in. Delpiccolo sent in quick pass, which Ilija Ilic dummied and left for Spencer, who calmly put it into the back of the net.
The Kickers will have a quick turnaround as they travel to take on USL newcomers Nashville SC Tuesday night down at First Tennessee Park at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time. That match will be available on the Kickers Official Television Partners WTVR CBS 6 on their 6.3 sub channel (Comcast 206, Verizon FiOS 466) and streaming online on ESPN+.
