August 25, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC (9-9-7) fell 1-2 to Swope Park Rangers (10-9-7) at Toyota Field on Saturday night. A goal from Darnell King and dominant second half were not enough for the Alamo City club to salvage points at home.
"We're very disappointed by the result of the match," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "You can see the contrast in the two halves tonight. We gave up two early set-piece goals which we're disappointed about, but the players responded well in the second half and created chances to score."
SPR opened the scoring just six minutes in when forward Hadji Barry slotted the ball past SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone from point-blank range following a corner kick. The visitors then added a second goal in the 25th minute after midfielder Felipe Hernandez found defender Amer Didic inside the SAFC box off a set piece, which Didic headed into the net for the 2-0 lead.
SAFC came out strong in the second half, creating 10 chances and recording 16 shots. Defender Darnell King found the back of the net in the 54th minute after intercepting a pass at the top of the visitors' box and burying a hard shot into the upper right corner. The goal marks King's second this season in USL play and third in all competitions this season. The Florida native also leads the club with five assists.
Midfielder Lance Laing made his club debut for San Antonio FC, playing 34 minutes and leading the team with three chances created on the night. The Jamaican also recorded two shots and 100 percent shot accuracy.
San Antonio FC will return to USL action on Wednesday, August 29 as they visit in-state rival Rio Grande Valley FC in Edinburg, Texas. The club will play five of its next six home matches away from home.
