Memphis Xplorers News Release

Southaven, MS - Memphis Xplorers lineman Khreem Smith has been selected as the Lineman of the Year, as voted on by af2 head coaches and beat writers.

Smith, in his rookie season, wasted no time in becoming a force to be reckoned with on the Xplorers defensive line. Registering nine sacks in the first four games of the year, he went on to lead the league with 17 for the season. His total ranks as the third best single season sack total of all time and the best ever by an Xplorers player. He had five games with more than one sack and two games in which he racked up three sacks, setting a team record.

The 26-year old former Oklahoma State standout also led the league with 11.5 tackles for loss in 2005. He tied for the league lead with six forced fumbles and was tied for second best with three fumble recoveries. Smith also had one safety, two blocked kicks and 28 tackles on the year.

"Khreem ability to rush the passer is amongst the best I have ever seen at this level," said Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "I honestly believe that we will see this guy playing in the NFL in the near future."

A native of Jamaica, Smith appeared in all 16 games for the Xplorers and was a big reason why the Memphis defense allowed a league low 37.6 points per game. Smith was honored as ADT Defensive Player of the Game six times, and he earned league recognition as ADT Defensive Player of the Week two times on the season.

The Xplorers are 2005 Mid West Division Champions. Memphis will host the Rio Grande Valley Dorados Friday night in the National Conference Championship Game.
