Kelowna Falcons News Release
The 2011 season of the Kelowna Falcons came to a very wet ending on Wednesday night as the regular season finale was rained out.
The Falcons took the field under sunny skies which quickly changed. After only four batters in the top of the first inning the clouds rolled in and opened up bringing the hardest rain fall of the year. Along with the rain came a spectacular lightning and thunder storm which ultimately suspended the game before the heavy rain cancelled it.
The Falcons were vying for their first sweep of the season after beating Bellingham on Monday 4-3 and 10-4 on Tuesday.
Prior to the game Brandon Marris was selected the Falcons "Most Outstanding Pitcher" and Bo Folkinga was selected the "Most Outstanding Player."
After the win on Tuesday night, Marris finishes 3-4 with a 3.21 ERA along with setting two new team records of 71 strikeouts and 81.1 innings pitched.
Folkinga finishes the season with a team best .310 batting average and 48 hits. He would collect eight doubles, 11 RBIs in 44 games. His 48 hits is the second most in a single season.
The Falcons finish the regular season 19-34, winning their last three series, including beating Wenatchee who were named a top five team in summer collegiate baseball. In their final 10 games the Falcons were 7-3.
Prior to the game, head coach Al Cantwell says his proudest moment was that series in Wenatchee during the final road trip of the year. In game one of the series the Falcons trailed 4-0, down to their final six outs and would come back to win 5-4 in their final two at bats. The next night they would clobber the Sox 11-2.
Coach Cantwell and General Manager Mark Nonis have begun to recruit players for the 2012 season and there could be between 3-10 players asked to return from this year.
The Falcons would like to thank the FANS for supporting the club throughout the "bummer summer." The organization would also like to thank the corporate community as well. Without their corporate partners summer collegiate baseball would never survive in the Okanagan Valley.
Stay tuned for team news throughout the offseason.
In other WCL news, the two time defending champion Wenatchee Applesox will face Walla Walla in the Eastern Division final, while Corvallis and Bend will meet in the West final for the third straight year.
