Nashville Kats News Release
NASHVILLE (Jan. 23, 2005) â The Nashville Kats cut three players, added three to injured reserve and placed four more on the practice squad, as the team set its 24-man opening week roster on Sunday.
Nashville waived fullback/linebacker Mike Green (6-0, 250), wide receiver/defensive back Fabian Davis (5-11, 180) and offensive lineman/defensive lineman Justin McElfish (6-5, 290). In addition, the Kats placed defensive specialist Tony Scott (5-10, 190), wide receiver/defensive back Jermaine Lewis (6-4, 209) and offensive lineman/defensive lineman Wes Stephens (6-4, 265) on injured reserve.
"This was a very difficult set of decisions," said Pat Sperduto, the Kats' head coach. "We didn't really have any guys we wanted to part with. However, we feel good about we are going into week one."
After cutting three players and placing three on injured reserve, the Kats placed offensive lineman/defensive lineman Ryan Roth (6-3, 275), quarterback Bill Whittemore (6-0, 205) and wide receiver/defensive back Angel Estrada (6-2, 215) on the practice squad. The Kats then signed offensive lineman/defensive lineman Tyler Lenda (6-2, 289) and placed him on the practice squad as well. Lenda was a center at Penn State, and was in training camp with the Denver Broncos this season.
The moves bring the team's active roster to 24, the maximum number allowed for a team to carry during the regular season. Each AFL team is also permitted to carry a four-man practice squad. The three players placed on injured reserve must miss a minimum of two regular season weeks before becoming eligible to be reactivated.
The Kats have 11 AFL rookies among the 24 players on their active roster. The team kept four of the five fullbacks/linebackers that they brought into training camp on the 24-man roster. They also kept two quarterbacks, one offensive specialist, seven two-way receivers, two defensive specialists, seven linemen and one kicker
Nashville kicks off the 2005 season on Friday at Columbus. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. CST. The team has its home opener a week later against New Orleans on Fri., Feb. 4. Season tickets are available by phone at 615-565-4700, or through Katsonline.com.
